US weather warning: America faces trio of cyclones as rain rampage to hit

It will be joined by two separate low-pressure systems circling and poised to unleash an autumn wind and rain hammering.

Parts of the already flood-stricken region could see up to five inches of rain over a short time, experts warn.

Jim Dale, US weather correspondent and senior meteorologist for British Weather Services, said: “This is being driven largely by the ashes of Tropical Storm Philippe which is coming into Canada and the north-eastern United States, primarily New England, New York and Boston.

“There will be some heavy and persistent rain associated with this, with the main risk going to be next weekend.

“There appear to be three lows around the region, including Ex-Philippe, with the heaviest rain to the north of these.”

Southerly states including Florida and New Mexico could be in the firing line as cold air from the north bumps into hotter air triggering rain.

A second pulse of the deluge will arrive as this ‘sub-tropical’ convergence builds towards the end of the week.

Mr Dale said: “This will be the result of a transition zone between the tropics and colder air coming in from the north.

“What we are really talking about is a sub-tropical convergence zone, and this will bring some rain to Florida, Louisiana and New Mexico.

“However, it will be further to the northeast where flooding will be a risk.”

Stormy conditions will whip up powerful winds with gusts of up to 50mph threatening exposed regions.

Philippe has now dissipated into an ex-tropical storm feature, although its associated energy will drive the assault.

The warnings come after weeks of unsettled weather has left swathes of the northeast ravaged by floods.

Weather Channel meteorologist Orelon Sidney said: “A trough of low pressure approaching from the west and post tropical cyclone Philippe all adds up to windy rainy conditions across New England.

“We are potentially looking at some flooding some areas from Maine all the way down the coast.

“Long Island could see a risk of flooding and of course we have high wind advisories the entire state, and those winds could gust up to 50 miles an hour.”

Around one to two inches of rain could fall widely around the region with some parts braced for five inches, she warned.

She added: “So if you're in a flood prone area, stay weather aware.”

Meanwhile, the National Hurricane Centre (NOAA) is closely watching yet another tropical disturbance emerging in the Atlantic.

The ‘low-latitude tropical wave’ off the coast of Africa has the tell-tale signs of a potential tropical storm or hurricane.

A NOAA spokesman said: “A low-latitude tropical wave located several hundred miles to the

south-southeast of the Cabo Verde Islands continues to produce a large area of disorganized showers and thunderstorms.

“Environmental conditions appear conducive for gradual development of this system,

and a tropical depression is likely to form by midweek while it moves westward to west-north-westward across the eastern tropical Atlantic.”
