The UK’s national weather service put out a yellow wind warning for Friday and Saturday

The Met Office has issued an alert for strong winds as a European heatwave threatens to spark downpours across the United Kingdom.

A yellow wind warning will impact much of England and Wales from 7am to 7pm today.

Strong gusts of up to 50 miles per hour could potentially result in disruption, travel delays and damage to temporary structures.

The Met Office said: “Strong winds will develop across southwest England early on Friday, extending northwards through the day to affect parts of Wales.

“Gusts of 35 to 45 miles per hour are likely quite widely for a time, with gusts over 50 miles per hour affecting some coasts and hills, mainly across Cornwall and west Wales.”

Northern Ireland is also facing adverse conditions with a yellow rain warning between midday and 9pm.

A second wind warning has been issued from 9am to midnight on Saturday.

The East Midlands, East of England, London, South East England, South West England and West Midlands have been identified as areas potentially at risk.

The Met Office’s warning for tomorrow suggests gusts could reach 55 miles per hour.

It could again result in travel issues and damage to temporary structures.

However, other issues could also arise, including short term loss of power and large waves in coastal communities.

“A deep area of low pressure will affect parts of the UK on Saturday with some very strong gusts of wind likely to its south,” the UK’s national weather service said.

“A blustery and showery day (with some thunder) will see winds gust widely to 40 miles per hour, and locally up to 50 to 55 miles per hour during the daytime.”

Poor conditions today and tomorrow come as Europe basks in an extreme heatwave.

Temperatures on the continent have risen above 40C, leading to wildfire warnings and threats to agriculture.

Despite mercury reaching almost unbearable levels across Europe, the Met Office claimed the same weather system is creating colder temperatures and gusty winds.

Temperatures will hover around the high teens for much of today, with London peaking at just 19C.

Cardiff will see mercury hit 20C and Glasgow looks set to go no higher than 18C.

Temperatures on Saturday will also peak at around 20C but most places will record mercury in the high teens.
