The UK’s national weather service issued its warning between 3am to 7pm today

Heavy rain is expected to bring a deluge of rain to the UK as the Met Office issues a yellow weather warning.

Up to 60 millimetres of rain could face across parts of Scotland later today, with flooding of a few homes and businesses possible.

Spray could also make journey times longer and public transport will face potential disruption in impacted areas.

The Met Office said: “Persistent rain will affect southwest Scotland on Tuesday, rain heavy at times before beginning to ease later.

"Accumulations of 25 to 40 mm rain are likely quite widely whilst in excess of 60 mm could fall on some exposed hills."

The Met Office identified Dumfries & Galloway, Scottish Borders and South Lanarkshire as areas impacted by the yellow warning.

It will remain in place between 3am and 7pm today.

Four flood alerts and one flood warning have been issued by the Scottish Environment Protection Agency.

England’s Environment Agency issued another quartet of alerts and warnings.

However, warm summery weather could make a return later this week.

The UK’s national weather service said: "Very warm with sunny spells in the southeast on Wednesday, otherwise changeable with a mix of rain and showers elsewhere. Staying rather cool in the northwest."

London will likely see the mercury hit 26C, with Manchester seeing temperatures hit 21C.

Cardiff will also see temperatures sneak into the low twenties, with Scotland struggling to get out of the high teens.

Netweather Senior Forecaster Nick Finnis said: "Ahead of the front, sunny, very warm or hot across eastern England - with temperatures reaching 25-28C."

Looking ahead to the period between August 30 and September 8, the Met Office added: "There may eventually be a trend towards very warm conditions, especially in southern areas, with perhaps an increasing chance of a few showers or thunderstorms as a result."

The spike in temperatures raises the prospects of Britons facing an Indian summer, especially in the South East of England.
