King Charles’ Coronation is expected to coincide with Britons basking in glorious sunshine as temperatures teeter towards 20C

A European heat plume is expected to bring mercury to its highest point this year so far, the UK’s national weather service has claimed.

The Met Office has predicted temperatures will soar later over the weekend as Britons line the streets to celebrate King Charles’ Coronation.

Parts of Wales, the north west, East Midlands, south east and London could hit 20C on Saturday.

However, parts of the United Kingdom could also face a few outbreaks of rain later in the day.

Mercury will cool slightly on Bank Holiday Monday, with temperatures hovering around 18C in the south of England.

Temperatures could reach as high as 21C, a temperature which would make Saturday the hottest day so far this year.

Met Office deputy chief forecaster Steven Keates said: "On Saturday we will see showers developing from late morning in some central, eastern and northern areas, but also with some sunny spells through the day.

"At this stage it looks like London could avoid the showers in the morning before some develop through the afternoon.

“Heavier rain is expected to move into the southwest of the UK and heavy showers are likely for parts of Northern Ireland.

"Winds will remain light away from the far north where gusty winds will begin to ease.

“Highs of 20C are possible in London in any sunshine, with mid to high teens possible elsewhere."

Temperatures could remain high on Sunday but Brits have been warned “thundery downpours” remain “likely” in places.

Warmer conditions over the weekend will come as welcome news to the Royal Family and Britons hoping to celebrate King Charles’ big day.

Thousands of people are expected to descend on London to catch a glimpse of the monarch making his 1.3 mile procession from Buckingham Palace to Westminster Abbey on Saturday.

Even more look set to celebrate the investiture on Sunday, with events up and down the country being held for the so-called Coronation Lunch.

The weekend’s events will conclude with the Coronation Concert at Windsor Castle on Sunday ahead of the Big Help Out on Monday.
