Weather expert Nathan Rao has confirmed that last night marked "the coldest night of winter so far" and issued a warning to "the elderly and the vulnerable" after temperatures plummeted to -14.4°C in parts of the UK.
The extreme temperatures have prompted concerns across the country, with widespread frost and freezing conditions affecting much of the region.
According to the Met Office, temperatures will remain low, with freezing fog persisting throughout the day for some areas.
Speaking to GB News, weather journalist Nathan Rao said: "A UK Health Security Agency cold weather health alert, remains in place until the beginning of next week.

"That is really an advisory to the elderly and vulnerable as this cold weather continues to make sure they keep warm and take the appropriate precautions."
He explained that despite the below freezing conditions last night, there is a glimmer of hope for next week as the weather will begin to turn slowly.

He said: "Last night that was the coldest night of winter so far it is very, very cold today.
"The good news is this cold snap is going to end very, very slowly. Don't expect anything too impressive and don't expect anything too quick.
"We are going to come out of this cold snap from the West as higher pressure builds to the south of the UK and brings in some slightly milder air.
"We're not talking about mild conditions, we're talking about temperatures probably just nudging double figures as we go into next week, but a lot more bearable than it's been. If you don't like the cold, this has been really, really bad."
The Government has also urged Brits to stay indoors, while keeping all living areas heated to at least 18C and, if you must leave home, it has been advised that you layer upPAAccording to the Met Office, temperatures will remain low, with freezing fog persisting throughout the day for some areas.
"Freezing fog may linger all day for some, keeping it very cold locally. But the majority will see some crisp winter sunshine, albeit staying frosty well into the day," the Met Office stated.
Maximum temperatures are expected to reach just 2C today.
The Met Office forecast indicates that freezing fog and low cloud will gradually clear to sunny spells by Sunday.
The Government has urged Brits to stay indoors while keeping all living areas heated to at least 18C and, if you must leave home, it has been advised that you layer upPAMonday will bring windier conditions with spells of heavy rain, which are expected to lighten by Tuesday.
The weather service confirms conditions will gradually turn milder as we move into next week.
Hour-by-hour forecasts show temperatures starting at -2°C in the early morning hours, with partly cloudy conditions and minimal chance of rain.
The mercury is expected to rise gradually through the morning, reaching 0C by 11am.
