Britons could see the hottest day of the year so far as temperatures are forecast to surge up to 26C this weekend.

However, the glorious weather is accompanied by a warning for hayfever sufferers amid high pollen forecasts.

According to the Met Office, southern England could see highs of up to 26C on Saturday.

So far, the hottest day was recorded last Thursday in Santon Downham, Suffolk, with the temperatures hitting 23.4C.

Conditions across the rest of the UK are expected to warm and sunny with top temperatures of mid-20s.

"High pressure dominates at the moment," Andrea Bishop, spokesperson at the Met Office told The Daily Mirror.

"The temperatures will be slightly above average for the time of year and Saturday is looking like the warmest day this week, when temperatures could peak at 26C."

Britons are also being warned of high pollen forecasts.

LATEST DEVELOPMENTS:

Bishop added: "We are encouraging people to take note of the pollen count and UV levels as these will both be high this week. So, if you do have hayfever, it may be unpleasant and you should take relief.

"Today, pollen levels will be at their highest at around 1pm and they'll remain high for most of the week. There are instances of high pollen levels and UV levels over the next few days, including Saturday, so we are encouraging people to be aware."

Northern parts of the UK could miss out on the sunshine as moving high pressure is expected to cause "prolonged periods of rainfall" across Northern Ireland and North Scotland.

More rain is set to pour down on the UK after the weekend with the Met Office's long-range forecast predicting this Sunday "likely to be the last widely dry and fine day for a while."

A spokesperson said: "After Sunday, the weather is expected to switch back to become changeable across the country, with further spells of rain and showers expected.

"Rainfall amounts could be above average in most areas. It is also possible that rain will be heavy at times, and any showers could turn thundery.

"Temperatures are also expected to fall closer to average for May."
