A yellow weather warning will come into effect from midnight tonight

The Met Office has issued a pair of yellow warnings as fresh snow is set to bring more travel chaos.

The warnings will cover Northern Ireland and Scotland and will come into effect from midnight tonight, lasting until 10am and 3pm in both nations respectively.

Residents living on higher ground can expect up to 20cm of the white stuff, while those on low ground are predicted to see 5cm.

Roads and railways will be affected, with journeys on all modes of public transport expected to take longer.

Locals have been urged to take caution as untreated roads, pavements and cycle paths could cause slips and falls, resulting in injuries.

The Met Office said: "Wintry showers will continue on Friday, some of these showers becoming quite prolonged.

"Snow will become increasingly confined to ground above 300 metres by the end of the morning.

"Ice will be an additional hazard as snow showers turn to rain at lower levels through the morning.

"If driving, make sure you have some essentials in your car in the event of any delays.

"Power cuts are likely and other services, such as mobile phone coverage, may be affected.

"There is a good chance that some rural communities could become cut off.

"Some delays and cancellations to rail and air travel are likely."

The forecaster urged Britons to keep checking the advice in their local area and "be prepared" as warnings could change quickly.

This comes off the back of an amber warning for snow in parts of northern Scotland earlier today.

Further yellow warnings will follow in the near future, with more being issued over the weekend.

Sunday and Monday will see two new warnings in place, this time for rain and wind, affecting the whole of the UK, except for the east and southeast, as well as parts of the Midlands.
