Storm Bert has been causing disruption across the UK

A weather reporter has admitted being "scared" of Storm Bert as it brings a complex mix of hazardous conditions to Britain this weekend.

Speaking on GB News, Nathan Rao said: "I am scared, Storm Bert is not a scary name. Bit of a scary storm.

“There are warnings all over the country, this morning I was looking at which warnings to pick out. If you look at the Met Office map, it is a splattering of weather warnings for snow and ice and what the Met Office are calling this is a multi hazard event.

“The reason for that is because we've got wind, we've got rain and we've got snow because you will have noticed over the past few days it's been very, very cold. And as Storm Burt comes in from the Atlantic, he's going to move over the north east of the UK, bringing moisture and warmth in.

“So you might notice it getting a little bit milder, but that is going to bump into the cold air over the UK and bring some very, very heavy snow, particularly to the north of the UK and Scotland, where there is an amber Met Office warning in place for up to a foot of snow elsewhere.

“The risk is winds of up to 70mph, and also for up to six inches of rain in parts of the country, and that could cause some flooding. And there are Environment Agency warnings out also for flooding.

“It doesn't matter where you are in the country, you're going to get some sort of bad weather. Met Office warnings are probably going to evolve through the weekend. This is a very slow moving storm.

“As I said, moving in from the Atlantic rather than zipping across the UK and finishing. We're still going to be feeling the tail end of it on Monday morning. So a whole weekend.

“I'd imagine that the Met Office warnings will evolve as we go through the weekend and as the risks sort of changes."

Met Office spokesman Oli Claydon emphasised the complex weather setup, urging the public to stay informed about local conditions.

"Further south it's wind and rain, further north it's snow then rain and wind. So it really depends on where you are in the UK," he said.

Winds could reach up to 70mph in coastal areas of southern England on Saturday evening.

Forecasters warn of potential flooding, with some areas expecting significant rainfall over a short period.

The storm arrives following a severe cold snap that has already caused widespread disruption across Britain.

The clash between Storm Bert and the current Arctic air mass is expected to create particularly challenging conditions.

The storm's slow-moving nature means its effects will be felt well into next week, meteorologists warn.
