The Met Office has issued a new yellow alert for “dense fog”, with Britons warned of travel chaos due to poor visibility.
The warning covers much of the south, stretching from Exeter to Kent. It began at 3am today and is in effect until 9am.
The Met Office said: “Not everywhere will see fog, but where fog patches do occur, visibility may fall below 100 metres in places, leading to difficult driving conditions and some travel disruption. Fog will slowly lift by mid morning.”
Those in the affected areas can expect slower journey times, with delays to bus and train services likely.

Motorists have been advised to set off early, or amend plans if necessary. The weather office added that drivers must ensure that their headlights are working properly.
Fog lights should also be used once visibility drops below 100 meters, and drivers are being recommended to locate their fog light switch before they set off.
As the mist clears, it will give way to both sunny spells and rain.
