The North Yorkshire hotspot boasts a high happiness rating

As the summer holiday season draws to a close, many Britons are opting for staycations closer to home.

A recent round-up by AA has crowned Harrogate as the best spot for your next staycation.


The area scored an impressive 7.8 out of 10 in happiness rating, determined by locals who live there.

The study used this date to determine the best spots across the UK to drive to, with other highlights including Stratford-upon-Avon and Newquay.

The Yorkshire town of Harrogate is renowned for its wellness resorts and spas, offering visitors a chance to unwind and rejuvenate.

Nature lovers can explore the Brimham Rocks or stroll through lush gardens like RHS Garden Harlow Carr.

The town also boasts a generous number of EV charging spots and petrol stations for travellers passing through, according to AA.

A spokesperson for the company said: “Aside from swimming and building up a sweat in the sauna, Harrogate is also great for doing a bit of sightseeing out in nature."

With a happiness rating of 7.6, Stratford-upon-Avon stood out for its rich historical buildings.

The medieval market town, which was the birthplace of Shakespeare, boasts a 16th-century half-timbered building.

The AA spokesperson shared: “Simply walking around the area is a grand experience in itself, as you’ll get to take in the sights of buildings that have been standing since the 14th century."

Visitors can enjoy the poet’s plays at the Royal Shakespeare Theatre or Swan Theatre along the River Avon.

Newquay, the popular Cornish seaside resort, ranks third with a happiness score of 7.5.

Families can enjoy attractions like the Blue Reef Aquarium, Newquay Zoo and various water spots.

With its sandy beaches and tropical atmosphere, Newquay offers a perfect blend of relaxation and adventure.
