Holidaymakers should 'stay aware of their surroundings' in Sri Lanka

The Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) has updated its information on the threat of terrorism in Sri Lanka, stating that attacks "cannot be ruled out".

Britons were warned that potential attacks could be "indiscriminate" and may target locations visited by foreign nationals and tourists.

Travellers were therefore advised to avoid crowded public places and "stay aware of their surroundings".

The FCDO emphasised the importance of staying informed through local media reports and following guidance from local authorities.

  • Large public gatherings, including major events, public holidays and religious occasions

The FCDO highlighted that the ongoing conflict in Israel and the Occupied Palestinian Territories has "heightened tensions" globally.

Terrorist organisations including Al-Qaida and Daesh have called on their supporters to conduct attacks in response to the conflict. The situation could also motivate individuals to carry out independent attacks.

LATEST DEVELOPMENTS

The warning comes as Sri Lanka continues to recover from the devastating Easter Sunday attacks of April 2019.

More than 250 people, including eight British nationals, lost their lives when terrorists targeted three churches and three hotels across the country. The coordinated attacks struck locations in Colombo, Negombo and Batticaloa.

The FCDO warned that potential targets could include Jewish or Muslim communities, as well as the interests of Israel and its allies.

The heightened alert status reflects growing concerns about the global impact of international conflicts on domestic security situations worldwide.

Sri Lanka is a popular tourist destination known for its blazing sun, safaris, scenic hikes, incredible beaches, water sports and delicious cuisine.

But before visiting the beautiful South Asian destination, it's important to consult the FCDO's latest travel guidance. This includes up-to-date information on warnings and insurance, entry requirements, safety and security, regional risks, health and getting help.

Britons were warned that there is a "high threat of terrorist attacks affecting UK interests and British nationals" on a global scale. This includes threats from groups and individuals who "view the UK and British nationals as targets".

Holidaymakers were urged to stay aware of their surroundings at all times. Before travelling, they should consult UK Counter Terrorism Policing's information and advice on staying safe abroad and what to do in the event of a terrorist attack.

They can also read the FCDO's dedicated guidance on how to reduce your risk from terrorism while abroad.

Britons were recently issued a fresh travel warning as terrorists are "likely" to attempt attacks in a European holiday spot.
