Travel warning: Britons in South America told to 'wear a face mask or stay inside'

The Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) told Britons: "Forest fires are affecting some parts of Ecuador, including Quito.

"This is having an impact on air quality in the areas most affected by the fires.

"It is advisable to wear a face mask if the air quality is particularly bad, or to stay inside.

"Follow the advice of local authorities and avoid travelling if fires break out in your area."

Holidaymakers flock to Ecuador for the idyllic Galápagos Islands, enchanting Amazon rainforest, dramatic landscapes and rich culture.

But before visiting the beautiful country, it's important to consult the FCDO for its essential, up-to-date information.

Britons were recently warned about a nationwide power outage in Ecuador. The FCDO told holidaymakers: "There will be nationwide power outages from Monday, September 23 until further notice, in some cases up to 12 hours a day, occurring at sporadic intervals.

"For more information on power cut times in your location, please check your local power provider’s official website or social media channels.

"There will be water cuts as a result of rationing in several areas of the country. Please check with your local water supplier for the hours and dates of these water cuts."

A State of Emergency has also been declared in several areas due to armed violence, as detailed by the FCDO.

The FCDO's Ecuador travel advice includes information on warnings and insurance, entry requirements, safety and security, regional risks, health and getting help.

There are some areas in Ecuador the FCDO advises against all but essential travel to. Before booking a trip, it's important to heed the UK Government's warnings.

Areas where FCDO advises against all but essential travel

Coastal Region

FCDO advises against all but essential travel to the Coastal Region provinces of:

• Esmeraldas
• Manabí
• Santa Elena
• Guayas
• El Oro
• Los Ríos
• Santo Domingo de los Tsáchilas

This does not apply to airside transit within Guayaquil Airport in Guayas province, including onward or return travel to the Galapagos Islands.

Within 20km of the Ecuador-Colombia border

FCDO advises against all but essential travel to areas within 20km of the Ecuador-Colombia border, except for these areas in Carchi province:

• El Ángel Ecological Reserve
• Rumichaca border crossing
• the town of Tulcán
• the Pan-American Highway
