Britons in France and Spain given serious health warning as illness spreads

France

The warning is specific to those who have visited Bordeaux and eaten at the Tchin Tchin Wine Bar in early September.

Anyone who has done so is urged to speak with a medical professional.

Foreign Office advice states: "French health authorities released a public warning... following an outbreak of botulism (severe food poisoning) at a restaurant in Bordeaux, France.

"The UK Health Security Agency is urging anyone who ate at the Tchin Tchin Wine Bar between 4 and 10 September to contact their local emergency department urgently.

"If you are in France, contact a healthcare professional or emergency services number 15 if you ate at this restaurant between these dates.

"Botulism does not spread from person to person."

Symptoms of botulism include feeling or being sick, stomach cramps, diarrhoea or constipation.

If it's not treated, it eventually causes paralysis to spread through the entire body, according to NHS.

This can include drooping eyelids, blurred or double vision, facial muscle weakness and difficulty swallowing.

Spain

There is an ongoing warning for those travelling to Spain amid "extreme temperatures affecting many areas of Spain".

If proper care isn't taken, this could lead to heatstroke which can cause symptoms such as high temperature, nausea and vomiting, rapid breathing and headaches.

Anyone who has experienced this while in extreme heat should seek medical help. A monkeypox outbreak was recently reported in Spain after six patients were found to have the illness.

The Barcelona Public Health Agency urged those in the area to be careful after cases were reported there in August.
