A 5.2 magnitude quake struck Santorini recently

Tourists planning on visiting Greece have been provided with an updated travel warning as the Greek Ministry of Civil Protection declared a state of emergency.

The Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) alerted Britons of increased seismic activity in Greece's Cycladic islands, with frequent earthquakes affecting the region.

The tremors are particularly impacting the islands of Santorini (Thira), Anafi, Ios and Amorgos, and authorities warn the seismic activity may continue for several weeks.

Greek officials have implemented a series of safety measures for residents and visitors in the affected areas.

The FCDO said: "The Greek authorities advised people not to attend large indoor gatherings, to avoid old or abandoned buildings and the ports of Amoudi, Armeni, Korfos and Old Port (Paleos Limenas) in the area of Fira."

Tourists have been told to choose safe routes when travelling, particularly in areas where the landslide risk is high. In case of a strong tremor, people should immediately depart coastal areas.

The FCDO advised people to stay vigilant and follow guidance from local authorities and emergency services.

Local emergency services are maintaining heightened alert status and continue to monitor the situation closely.

On February 6, Greek authorities declared a state of emergency on Santorini, set to remain in place until March 3.

The emergency declaration aims to enable emergency services to better access and mobilise resources for preparation efforts.

The FCDO stated: "If you are in the affected areas, you should keep up to date with and follow the advice of local authorities and emergency services."

The Greek Ministry of Civil Protection has made guidance available in English for those seeking information about earthquake preparedness.

The FCDO has also warned Britons travelling to a European holiday spot of the risk of terrorist attacks.

In a new travel advisory, the FCDO warned holidaymakers that terrorists are "likely" to attempt attacks in Belgium.

The warning comes amid ongoing security concerns in the European nation, which has experienced several terrorist incidents in recent years.
