Attacks could target locations frequented by foreign nationals

The Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) has updated its travel advice for Austria, sharing new updates on the country's terror threat.

Britons visiting the central European destination were warned that terrorists are "likely to try to carry out attacks" in the country.

Officials cautioned that terrorist attacks in Austria "could be indiscriminate" and might target locations frequented by foreign nationals.

The FCDO highlighted several potential targets for attacks, including public transport and national and international transport hubs. Music, sporting and cultural events are also considered at risk.

Entertainment establishments, nightlife venues, government buildings and international institutions were listed as locations that could be targeted. Places of worship and religious sites are also mentioned in the advisory.

Tourists were urged to "be vigilant in public places and follow the advice of local authorities".

The updated advice comes after several incidents in recent years, including fatal attacks in 2020 and 2025.

In February 2025, one person was killed and five injured in a knife attack in central Villach, southern Austria.

In November 2020, four people were killed and 23 injured in a terrorism-related shooting in central Vienna.

Britons planning a visit to Austria were advised to "stay aware of [their] surroundings at all times".

Austrian authorities have disrupted various attack plans in recent years, making several arrests.

Travellers may notice "an increased police presence" and "additional safety measures" in place across the country.

Terrorism is a risk that all travellers should be aware of, as "there is a high threat of terrorist attack globally affecting UK interests and British nationals".

UK Counter Terrorism Policing offers information on reducing risk from terrorism while abroad. The FCDO also has a dedicated webpage on how to reduce your risk from terrorism while abroad.
