New travel warning for British holidaymakers who risk falling victim to crime in 'breathtaking paradise'

Indeed, Discover Dominica said: "There are only so many hours in the day. Even on Dominica. And with mile after mile of untouched emerald paradise to explore, we want to ensure that every breathtaking moment on the island isn't missed."

But before visiting the picturesque destination, holidaymakers should consult the UK Government's latest guidance.

As part of its Safety and Security guidelines, the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) advised tourists to "take precautions to protect their personal safety" amid crime.

Precautions to protect your personal safety

• Make sure your accommodation is secure – this also applies if you’re staying on a yacht 
• Take care when walking alone off main roads
• Take particular care around large gatherings, including street and beach parties, especially after dark or during the festival season 
• Avoid isolated areas, including beaches, after dark 
• Only use licensed taxis 
• Do not carry large amounts of cash or jewellery 
• Leave valuables and travel documents in your hotel safe or a safety deposit box 
• Keep car doors locked when driving and do not stop if pedestrians try to flag down your vehicle

It's important to consult the FCDO's up-to-date guidance when planning a trip to Dominica.

This includes the latest information on warnings and insurance, entry requirements, safety and security, health and getting help.

Also under its Safety and Security guidance, the FCDO warned Britons that Dominica is not free from the risk of terrorism.

Holidaymakers were told: "There is a high threat of terrorist attack globally affecting UK interests and British nationals, including from groups and individuals who view the UK and British nationals as targets. Stay aware of your surroundings at all times."

Protests first broke out in "picture-perfect" Martinique on September 23 and holidaymakers have since been told to follow the advice of local authorities.
