A power outage has caused widespread disruption, including to the mobile phone network and transport links

British holidaymakers have been issued a new travel warning following a power outage that continues to disrupt the Caribbean.

The Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) updated travellers on the nationwide power outage that hit Cuba on March 14, 2025.

Power was restored across the country two days later on March 16. However, despite the restoration of electricity, planned power outages continue throughout Cuba.

The FCDO issued a travel warning to British tourists visiting the Caribbean island, advising them to take precautions.

The FCDO stated: "Planned electricity outages continue across Cuba, including in Havana. In other areas of the country, power outages can be much longer."

Areas outside the capital are experiencing more severe disruptions with extended periods without electricity.

"You should take precautions such as conserving fuel and mobile phone charge, particularly if travelling outside Havana," the FCDO warned.

Planning ahead is essential for travellers to minimise disruption to their holiday plans.

Visitors should ensure devices are fully charged whenever possible and limit unnecessary power usage to maintain communication capabilities during outages.

The FCDO also highlighted potential communication challenges during the outages: "The mobile phone network may be limited."

For those travelling from place to place, transportation across the island faces disruption due to refuelling difficulties during blackouts.

In light of this, the FCDO emphasised: "Ensure you have enough fuel before setting off on your journey."

Britons in Cuba were advised to fill up their vehicles completely when possible and plan journeys with potential fuel shortages in mind.

Cuba, one of the oldest Caribbean islands, is known for charming, characterful Havana, beachy Varadero and lush Viñales.
