British holidaymakers should be aware of the new restrictions

Tenerife has announced it will be enforcing a ban on access for large tourist coaches to Anaga Massif next year, restricting holidaymakers from accessing the Anaga Rural Park.

The aim of the ban is to improve traffic flow for locals in the area and "address the concerns of the thousands of residents and visitors."

Restrictions in the area will begin in January 2025 and will impact British tourists into the spring and summer.

The President of the Tenerife Cabildo, Rosa Dávila, proposed the rules saying that the island needed to implement a new structure to the "outdated model" they had.

The ban forms part of 70 initiatives that are currently undergoing, which have resulted in 23 million fewer vehicle journeys in the past 15 months across the island, according to Dávila.

The Socialist Party in Spain the PSOE have expressed scepticism about the figures and have requested proof from Dávila.

Dávila and the Cabildo of Tenerife pointed to the 7,000 additional bus journeys and the fact that 93 per cent of trips were made by locals to back up this figure.

The Cabildo said: "Over a million trips occur in the metropolitan area (…). This is crucial for understanding the solutions, as 89 per cent of these journeys are made in private vehicles with an average occupancy rate of 1.3."

Dávila emphasised: "In Tenerife, there have been over 3.5 million daily vehicle journeys. Our population is still increasing and as we are situated on an island that must be preserved, we cannot expand indefinitely."

The leader of PSOE, Pedro Martín believed that mobility projects around the area are being neglected with these enforcements.

He suggested that the shuttle services are being used by tourists which is not their intention.

Tenerife is not the only area imposing restrictions in Barcelona, as there is a tourism crackdown which has been backed by Barcelona's Mayor.

Dávila has recently been in the headlines once more in Tenerife for taking a strict approach against hikers after 130 had to be rescued recently.

She said she will take "decisive" action against hikers who engage in "reckless behaviour" in the future.
