Britons visiting Sweden and Denmark told to 'remain vigilant' while visiting countries as they face ‘high threat’

A statement by the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) reads: “The Eurovision song contest will take place in Malmo from 4 May to 11 May. There will be a greater number of people in Malmö during this time.

“Travel around the city may be affected by travel control systems, or protests. See safety and security information if you plan to be in Malmö, or attending the event.”

With more visitors entering the country, visitors have been warned that the country faces a heightened risk of terrorism.

“There is a high threat of terrorist attacks globally affecting UK interests and British nationals, including from groups and individuals who view the UK and British nationals as targets. You should remain vigilant at all times."

It added: “Terrorists are very likely to try to carry out attacks in Sweden. Attacks could be indiscriminate in places frequented by foreigners.

“The authorities in Sweden have successfully disrupted a number of planned attacks and made a number of arrests.”

As many as 100,000 visitors are set to descend on Sweden's southwest coast for the live music contest.

Malmö police chief Petra Stenkula said the country was already on a "terror level of four out of five", with neighbouring countries also at risk.

The Foreign Office issued a similar warning for travellers in Denmark, warning that Britons stopping in Copenhagen should be on alert too.

Tourists have been told to check the Eurovision song content website to stay informed and keep abreast of information shared by Swedish authorities on the rise information website.

The Foreign Office has issued several warnings in recent weeks as tensions in the Middle East heighten the terror threat for UK nationals.

Britons visiting Turkey were also issued a warning about their safety and urged to “remain aware” of their surroundings” during their travels.

The government warned tourists that a “high threat of terrorist attacks globally affecting UK interests and British nationals” could put their safety at risk.

“Most terrorist attacks have occurred in southeast Turkey, Ankara, and Istanbul,” said the FCDO.

“You should remain aware of your surroundings, keep up to date with local media reports, follow the advice of local media reports and follow the advice of local authorities.

“Attacks could be indiscriminate including in places visited by foreigners, such as public buildings, places of worship, airports and large public gatherings (including major events, public holidays and religious occasions.”
