Holidaymakers are looking elsewhere due to Spain's restrictions on tourists

As summer holidays are on the horizon, Britons have said they will never travel to Spain again as restrictions are making it unappealing.

The reaction comes as Malaga implemented a three-year ban on the registration of new holiday rentals.

The ban on registering holiday rentals affects 43 districts and took effect on January 14. It specifically targets areas where holiday rentals exceed eight per cent of residential blocks.

The ban prevents new holiday rental registrations but does not affect the 13,000 properties already officially registered in Malaga City.

GB News readers have shared their opinions on the update and have even said they would not return to Spain for a holiday.

One commented: "Boycott it as a holiday destination, they will soon be begging us back."

Another said: "Last time we went to Spain on a family holiday was in the zeros and the food was terrible. The locals were rude and I vowed never to return."

One user picked out the impact on Spain's economy. They said: "If it weren’t for Britain, Spain's currency would collapse. Do not go to Spain on holiday and teach them a lesson."

British holidaymakers lead tourist spending in Spain with 12.6 million British tourists arriving up to August 2024.

A GB News reader could understand the emotion in Spain and felt sorry for locals, who protested against tourism last year.

They said: "You have to have some sympathy with the native Spanish being swamped by tourists. Frankly, I wouldn't want to holiday where the British lager swilling football shirt brigade target."

One user disagreed and said: "Carry on as you are Spain, and you will see a real dent in your tourism industry. Be careful what you wish for!"

Another claimed: "I've never been and never will go to Spain. I've unfortunately met quite a few Spanish in my time, and they are not very nice, so quite frankly, it put me off!"

Despite this backlash, airlines have been increasing their routes to Spain. Vueling Airlines announced two new daily direct flight routes to the country.

These will allow holidaymakers to fly from London Heathrow to Bilbao and Santiago de Compostela as of March 30.

TUI has also expanded its city break portfolio with the addition of two new Spanish destinations, Sitges and Malaga.

The expansion comes as TUI reports its city break bookings have grown by approximately 30 per cent annually.
