Ryanair will scrap paper tickets completely this year

Ryanair has announced it will delay its transition to 100 per cent paperless boarding passes until November 3, 2025.

The move, confirmed today, will coincide with the start of the airline's Winter schedule.

Europe's largest airline said the initiative will eliminate most airport check-in fees for passengers. It will also save over 300 tonnes of paper waste annually.

The transition aims to enhance customer experience through the myRyanair app, which is already used by nearly 80 per cent of the airline's 200 million passengers.

From November 2025, passengers will no longer download and print physical boarding passes. Instead, they will use digital boarding passes generated in the myRyanair app during check-in. The date has been pushed back as this was originally meant to start from May 2025.

The airline expects to eliminate almost all airport check-in fees from November 2025.

This is because all passengers will have checked in online or via the app to generate their digital boarding pass.

The transition is scheduled during the less busy Winter schedule. The environmental impact of the move is significant, with Ryanair expecting to save over 300 tonnes in paper waste each year.

This will help passengers reduce their carbon footprint by eliminating unnecessary paper.

The airline says the transition will also benefit customers financially. Most airport check-in fees will be eliminated as passengers switch to digital boarding passes.

The myRyanair app is designed to streamline the travel experience for customers.

Users receive terminal, gate and boarding status updates. Real-time alternative flight options are available during disruption. All travel documents are accessible in one convenient place.

Ryanair CMO Dara Brady said: "Ryanair is Europe’s No.1 airline for choice, low fares, and customer service. This move to 100 per cent paperless boarding passes from November 2025 will allow us to deliver an enhanced travel experience for customers, streamlined through the myRyanair app during our less busy Winter schedule.

"This will be particularly useful to passengers during disruptions as it will facilitate real-time updates from our Ops Centre directly to passengers’ phones, and will also provide them with alternative flight options, and offer transfers or hotel accommodation options when necessary.

"Like other ticket industries (concert, sports venues, rail, etc.) there has been a massive switch to using mobile, and with almost 80% of Ryanair customers already using the myRyanair app, it is time to transition the remaining passengers to digital, which will see them reduce their carbon footprint and receive a smoother and enhanced travel experience from November 2025 as Ryanair continues to grow to 300m passengers over the next decade.”
