Lisbon offers something for everyone: it's brimming with stunning architecture, delicious cuisine, and a vibrant arts and culture scene. Its coastline is also beautiful for those who love beaches.

The experts said: "All in all, Lisbon balances the modern amenities of a capital city and the traditional charm of a small town, making it the best city in Portugal for expats."

Some main attractions include the 16th-century tower Torre de Belém, the architectural masterpiece Mosteiro dos Jeronimos and the world-renowned aquarium Oceanário de Lisboa.

One visitor to the Torre de Belém told Tripadvisor: "Beautiful tower on the banks of Tagus river. Such a relaxing scenery. One can literally spend hours sitting next to the river and enjoying the beauty of the tower.

"The walk across the river is magical, especially if the weather is good. We walked all the way to Padrão dos Descobrimentos (Monument of Discoveries) and then came back to enjoy the sunset. Magical."

A visitor to the aquarium said: "The aquarium is one of the most beautifully designed aquariums I’ve been too. Anyone can enjoy it."

For Britons who cannot speak Portuguese, the official language of Portugal, many locals are able to speak English. Settling into a new country can be tricky, but being able to communicate easily and effectively will be a great relief to British expats.

As a vibrant and bustling capital city, it is unsurprising that Lisbon can be "relatively expensive, especially compared to other Portuguese cities".

According to the experts, a single person should budget around €702 (around £601) per month for daily expenses, excluding rent.

For those relocating as a family, a family of four can expect to pay around €2,481 (about £2,125) in monthly costs, excluding rent.

Porto came in at number two for best cities to live in Portugal. Portugal's second-largest city is vibrant and home to fabulous film and music festivals. Like Lisbon, it's a good choice for those who are not proficient in Portuguese.

While Portugal is an extremely popular destination, two expats warned why moving to Portugal might not be for everyone - 'it can be a bit shocking'.
