The flights were planned to start in May 2025

Jet2 has cancelled its planned summer flights from Birmingham and Manchester to Salerno on Italy's Amalfi coast.

The weekly services were scheduled to begin in May and run until the end of September.

Jet2 had intended to be the only airline operating to Salerno from Birmingham and Manchester, despite easyJet currently flying there from London Gatwick.

Jet2 originally announced the launch of flights to Salerno Costa d'Amalfi Airport last September. The destination would have become the airline's ninth Italian airport.

At the same time, Jet2holidays introduced a range of new hotels and resorts along the Amalfi Coast.

These included accommodation in Amalfi, Positano, Ravello and Vietri sul Mare. Salerno itself was set to be a new resort destination for the operator.

The airline planned weekly flights throughout the summer season. The cancellation comes before any of the planned services had operated.

A spokesman for Jet2 said: "As a successful business, we are continually reviewing our flying programme and will make adjustments where required.

"This gives us the ability to add flights and holidays in response to demand, and very occasionally we may withdraw flights too.

"Following this latest review, we have taken the decision to withdraw services to Salerno Airport from Birmingham and Manchester Airports.

"With a fantastic programme of services to Naples Airport from seven UK bases, including Birmingham and Manchester, we know that customers and independent travel agents still have superb choice when it comes to accessing the region."

In other travel news, fresh guidance for holidaymakers in Australia has been issued as "severe hazards" could occur.

In a fresh warning for British holidaymakers, the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) updated its information on tropical cyclone Alfred.

Tourists were advised that the cyclone is forecast to affect five parts of Australia: Brisbane, the Sunshine Coast, Gold Coast, South East Queensland and Northern New South Wales.

This builds upon recent advice issued by the FCDO about tropical cyclone Alfred. In the latest update, Britons were given more resources that may help them.

The Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) warned: "The cyclone is nearing the coastline and severe weather is gradually increasing, however, the most intense rain will not arrive until the weekend for many regions."
