Expats starting afresh in Austria's capital have been pleasantly surprised by the high quality of life

When Britons consider moving abroad, destinations like France and Spain often emerge at the top of their radar.

Some of the continent's most culturally rich destinations, including Austria, offer equally unique benefits to expats.

In fact, Austria's capital, Vienna, ranks in the top 10 on the quality of life index thanks to its rich history and architecture.

The index looks at various factors, including healthcare, education, cultural scene and infrastructure, to establish a score out of a hundred.

Many people who move to the city from neighbouring countries also praise its attractive work-life balance.

Relocation experts at HomeExchange say Vienna "consistently tops the list not just of the best places to live in Europe but in the entire world".

It adds: "With a sophisticated population quality of life is high and crime is low.

"Vienna is renowned for its architectural grandeur, rich musical heritage, and thriving arts scene.

"The city offers a high standard of living, excellent healthcare and a wealth of cultural experiences."

Expats Khyati and Puria have documented their experience settling in the Austrian capital on their YouTube channel, where they praise the city's urban amenities and green spaces.

"Vienna is a city that knows how to live well," Puria explained in the clip.

"In the last five years, Vienna has earned the title of the most liveable city in the world.

"It’s the perfect blend of urban amenities and green spaces."

Another attractive factor is the city's efficient transport, which according to Puria, makes getting around the city "a breeze".

"Within the city, you’ll find an extensive network of metros, trains, trams, and buses that run like clockwork," she added.

Moving to Vienna: What you need to know

According to InterNations, moving to Austria is easier if you are an EU or EEA citizen because you do not need a visa to live there, nor a residence or work permit.

Many Britons find integration into Vienna's workforce relatively easy from an administrative point of view.

"From a lifestyle point of view, you'll find it much easier to integrate if you speak German," note experts at MoveHub.

"While the native population generally speak an Austra-Bavarian dialect of German, standard German is universally understood and is used as a lingua franca."
