GB News is speaking to expats across Europe and the world about the best places to visit in their chosen country. This week, an expat in Spain told holidaymakers why Cadaqués should be next on their list

Eight years ago, Alastair Johnson and his wife Alison relocated to Sitges, Spain, with their son. They initially planned to stay for a one-year sabbatical but completely fell in love with the country and decided to make it their long-term home.

Alastair spoke to GB News about his move to Spain; the "relaxed" attitude to the time really "bugged" him at first, but he soon realised the Spanish have "really got it right".

He also shared his "favourite" place in Spain "off the beaten track", claiming that it's "very unlike most of the country".

Spain is an immensely popular country among holidaymakers, with Madrid, Barcelona, Valencia and Seville on everybody's travel bucket lists, but there's so much more of the country to see.

Over his eight years in the gorgeous European country, Alastair has enjoyed lots of "slow travel" around Spain, exploring places tourists may typically neglect.

The expat said: "It really is worth trying to get a bit off the beaten track. The big tourist attractions are tourist attractions for a reason, but then the people there are a bit more jaded. They've seen a lot more people come and go.

"If you get out into the smaller places and sort of off the beaten track, you really do find some fantastic experiences of being in Spain and there's some lovely parts of it."

When asked about his favourite places in Spain, Alastair revealed that the town of Cadaqués is one of his top choices.

Cadaqués

Spain's official tourist website describes Cadaquésas "one of the most emblematic towns on the Costa Brava of Girona".

One of its top attractions is the Cap de Creus National Park, home to the common toad, ocellated lizard and Mediterranean tortoise.

Holidaymakers also love the hike from the south side of the bay to Far de Cala Nans (Cala Nans Lighthouse).

Alastair said: "Cadaqués is just gorgeous. It's one of the most picturesque, beautiful little towns - think rocky coves, crystal blue sea."

The expat added that Salvador Dalí spent quite a lot of time there and recommended holidaymakers visit his house-museum in Port Lligat.

Cadaqués is also the perfect destination for foodies. Alastair said: "It has the most amazing fresh seafood. Every restaurant we ate at there was just great.

"Spanish food is lovely. If you can eat the food, drink a nice glass of wine and sit looking out at the blue sea, it's lovely."

He concluded: "The people there are delightful as well, really welcoming and friendly."
