The cheapest places to live in Europe have been shared based on a number of common expenses

Britons may move abroad in search of new experiences, a new culture or even a cheaper way of living.

Experts have rounded up the most affordable places to move in Europe and there are some beautiful, sunny destinations on the list. The number one location has homes to rent for less than £400.

Experts at Link Moving considered factors like the cost of a meal, kitchen staples and the monthly cost of accommodation and bills.

It found Portugal to be the cheapest with a one-bedroom apartment costing an average of €430 (around £365).

The research states: "[Portugal] is famous for good food, beautiful beaches, a relaxed lifestyle, and affordable living.

"The capital city Lisbon is one of the top relaxation destinations for travellers to Europe.

"On average, a meal at a standard restaurant will cost €7.50 (£6.40). Kitchen staples like milk and bread are a low €0.60 and €1.10 (50p and 95p) respectively.

"A one-bedroom apartment is an average €430, with combined utilities sitting at around €92 (£78) a month. While the average salary is a bit lower than some other countries in the region at €798 (£680), it’s still affordable living."

The average rental price for a one-bed property in the UK, excluding London, was £1,126 in 2022, meaning Portugal offers substantially cheaper rent.

Of course, costs can vary based on several factors including location and quality, so expats should do their research thoroughly before making a move.

Portugal has lots of beautiful spots for expats to move to, from bustling Lisbon to the scenic Algarve. Many people in this area will visit Ponta da Piedade along the coastline of Lagos.

Those who have visited shared their reviews on Tripadvisor. One said: "Wow I never heard of this place until I experienced it via a wonderful excursion and wow this place blew my mind. It’s literally heaven on earth. This is a must seen place if you're in Portugal. The wonder of the rock formations are something to behold."

A second added: "Beautiful beaches. The sand is the nicest I've ever seen. Worth the walk. The coastal boardwalk is lovely and we also did it the night before to watch the sunset. Amazing scenery. The beaches and sea are so clean."

Another agreed and wrote: "Ponta da Piedade is a beautiful place. The beaches, caves and rock formations are other worldly. It was not crowded when we were there... I highly recommend taking a boat tour to see the caves and drift around the lovely rock formations."

This comes as an expat exclusively shared her experience living in Portugal.
