UK retailers are struggling to meet demand ahead of Christmas
Sony announced a refreshed version of its PlayStation 5 console last month, known as the "Slim Model" because of its svelter frame. While the original iteration of the console will soon be retired, until the remaining consoles are sold, Sony has instructed retailers to slash the price by a whopping £90.
And with Christmas looming on the horizon, this Black Friday deal has been a huge success. A swathe of retailers took part in the promotion, which dropped the cost of the latest Sony PlayStation generation from £479.99 for the model with an optical disc drive and Blu-Ray player, down to just £389.
Argos, AO.com, GAME, Currys, andAmazonall took part in the sale ...and at the time of writing, none of these retailers have any discounted PS5s left for delivery.
If you're desperate to get your hands on the PlayStation 5, there are still a few ways to secure this bargain. First up, while Argosand Curryshave no stock left for delivery, it's possible that you'll be able to find one in your local store. You can check stock levels with your postcode on their websites or, if you're feeling brave, you could head down there to check the shelves yourself.
But Sony itself still has stock to buy on its online store.
The Japanese gaming firm offers free delivery nationwide in the UK as well as the standard one-year hardware warranty on its console.
If you haven't upgraded to the latest console generation, this Black Friday might be your best opportunity with discounts to both the Xbox Series X (pictured, left) and original Sony PS5 (right)

Inside the box with the PlayStation 5, you'll find the console, a single DualSense wireless controller and USB charging cable, a stand to support your PS5 horizontally or vertically, an HDMI and charging cable. Sony bundles the game Astro's Playroom for free with all versions of the PS5, but you'll find that preinstalled in the console's memory — there's no disc.
With its new Slim PS5, the engineers at Sony managed to cut down the overall volume of the console by 30% — saving you a lot of space behind your telly.
Inside, the performance of the newer PS5 and the original model is identical, so you won't be missing out by taking advantage of the Black Friday savings around. Just like the original PlayStation 5 launch, customers looking at the new Slim models can pick between an all-digital edition with no disc drive for a lower price, or the pricier option with a built-in Blu-Ray reader for movies and games.
The new design arrives in the UK from November 29, 2023.
Sony isn't the only console manufacturer dropping prices for Black Friday, with Microsoft's rival Xbox Series X plummeting to an all-time low price tag in the UK. Three years after it made its debut in the UK — amid widespread stock shortages — Microsoft has cut £120 from the price tag of the flagship Xbox Series X, dropping the console to just £359. That's £30 cheaper than the Sony PS5.
The more affordable (albeit less powerful) Xbox Series S has also been discounted in the Black Friday sales. This slimline console is capable of playing all of the same titles as the top-of-the-line Xbox Series X ...but misses out on some pro-level features, like 4K Ultra HD picture quality during gameplay.
Usually £249.99, the console has dropped to £189 at a number of stores in the sale.
