Think you know everything about Sky Glass 2? Think again.

Sky Glass Gen 2 is now available to order.

The second-generation model was unveiled some four years after Sky launched its first all-in-one 4K TV concept. Glass Gen 2 builds on its predecessor with an improved QLED panel that promises a brighter picture and new upward-firing speakers for vocal clarity and a 360º Dolby-certified sound. One thing that hasn't changed since the original Sky Glass is the price.

Starting from £14 a month, Sky Glass Gen 2 is available to buy outright or as a interest-free payment plan alongside your chosen Sky TV bundle.

Like its smaller Sky Stream box, Sky Glass Gen 2 eschews the traditional satellite dish in favour of streaming live television via Wi-Fi or a wired Ethernet cable. It's also available with a 31-day rolling contract, so you can cancel at any moment — something previously only possible with Sky TV's sister service NOW, formerly known as NOW TV.

With Sky seeking to wind down its satellite dish business, Sky Glass Gen 2 is definitely the future of the service. And if you're thinking of upgrading to a new television, switching to a plug-and-play 4K QLED TV that handles all your streaming services, live television, and exclusive Sky TV content — with a Dolby Atmos soundbar and hands-free voice control has its appeal. In fact, Sky Glass 55" was the single best-selling TV model in the UK in 2023.

If you want to upgrade — just make sure you secure one of the best Sky Glass deals before you sign-up for a new contract.

Sky Glass Gen 2 prices typically start from £14 per monthfor the 43", rising to £19 for the 55", and maxing-out at £24 for the 65", with next-day delivery included for free with all orders. Unlike every other Sky TV boxes, you can order Sky Glass from branches of Currys nationwide too.

You can use Glass Gen 2 with an aerial to watch free-to-air channels as well as content from the built-in streamers, like Netflix, Prime Video, Disney+, Discovery+, Apple TV+, ITVX, BBC iPlayer, and others. If you want to watch exclusive Sky TV channels, sports, movies, and boxsets, prices for its bundle of channels start from £15 a month. That includes a Netflix subscription.

If you've followed the launch of Sky Glass Gen 2 since it was unwrapped at an event in central London in early February — you'll know a lot about this all-in-one telly. However, Sky didn't reveal everything about this 4K TV during that event.

We've got a list of 5 things you probably didn't know about Sky Glass Gen 2.

1. It's lighter than last time

From the outside, Sky Glass Gen 2 might look identical to its predecessor, but this updated model has been on a serious diet. In total, the engineers at Sky were able to shave-off 5kg from the weight of this all-in-one television.

There's no change to the dimensions of the Sky Glass, so those hoping the weight loss would result in a thinner telly will be disappointed.

Glass Gen 2 remains 47.7mm thick, primarily to include enough room for the new seven-speaker array squeezed inside. This boxy design has become a trademark for the Sky-built television and shouldn't trouble most viewers.

The dramatic weight loss is all thanks to the redesigned aluminium stand, which is now small enough to ship inside the same box as the television and can be assembled without any tools for a faster set-up

However, if you opt for the optional wall-mount (£99 one-off payment) expect your Sky Glass Gen 2 to protrude from the wall by some margin, despite the clever mounting design keeping the television just 17.7mm from the wall.

Sky managed to shed 5kg from the redesigned stand. This svelte new aluminum stand can be fitted without tools for an easier set-up. And its new design is small enough to fit inside a single box with the Glass Gen 2, rather than arriving in a separate box like the previous generation.

2. It has handles

Yes, if you want to test out just how much lighter the Sky Glass Gen 2 really is — you're in luck. On the back of its second-generation telly, Sky has added two recesses to make it easier to move the Glass Gen 2 into place.

Of course, this isn't the sort of thing you'll be using on a weekly basis. But for those rare times, when you're redecorating or relocating the telly to another room, this small design tweak at the back of the Sky Glass Gen 2 will come in handy. Sky says that it always recommends at least two people to carry its 55" or 65" Glass TVs.

While it might be lighter than last time, the Sky Glass 43” still weighs 14.7kg, with the 55” model tipping the scales at 21.9kg, and 65” at 30.3kg.

3. Sonos and TfL veterans helped design it

When Sky embarked on its first venture into the Smart TV market, it sought the expertise of Map Project Office, an esteemed East London-based industrial design firm. Although the name might not be widely recognised — their previous collaborations with renowned companies like Sony, Starbucks, Google, Jaguar Land Rover, Samsung, and Joseph Joseph have undoubtedly left a mark.

The team at Map Project Office played a pivotal role in designing the interiors of the new Elizabeth Line tubes as part of the Crossrail project. And beyond train carriage décor, Map Project Office has also collaborated with the renowned smart audio brand Sonos.

When it came to designing a unique television with a soundbar baked in, Sky turned to Map Project Office for help. The team has worked with dozens of popular brands and was responsible for the design of the Sonos Amp amongst other gadgets

The collaboration resulted in the design of the Sonos Amp, a versatile device that lets you connect a slew of audio equipment, including turntables and stereos, to your wireless Sonos speaker system. The London-based studio was entrusted with the design of the hardware and packaging experience.

It's unclear how much involvement Map Project Office specifically had in the Sky Glass Gen 2 design. On its website, it only confirms that it worked with the UK broadcaster back in 2021 on the "Sky Glass TV" and "hardware roadmap," which suggests it was already thinking about potential follow-ups.

At the launch event, Sky revealed that it decided to stick with the same overall design for its second Sky Glass to maintain consistency. As such, a lot of the work from the team at Map Project Office remains in this new model some four years later.

4. It's less colourful and less customisable

Unfortunately, the Dusty Pink and Racing Green colours seen on the original Sky Glass didn't make the cut this time round.

Yes, at launch you'll only be able to choose between three finishes on Sky Glass Gen 2:

  • Volcanic Grey
  • Atlantic Blue
  • Arctic Silver

If you're looking to upgrade to the Sky Glass Gen 2, you'll have to pick between Volcanic Grey, Arctic Silver, and Atlantic Blue SKY TV PRESS OFFICE

That compares to the five options available when the original Sky Glass TV made its debuted four years ago. But that's not the only blow for those who want a splash of colour on their all-in-one telly. One of the quirky design features of the original Sky Glass was the ability to pick between a colour-matched speaker cover or a contrasting one at checkout — albeit for an additional fee.

And the UK broadcaster didn't stop there. Sky launched a dedicated store on Amazon UK packed with limited edition speaker covers with more design flair to switch-up the look of your Glass TV. Unfortunately, a representative from the brand confirmed to GB News that these optional covers do not work with the Glass Gen 2 design. That's because the speaker cover is fixed into the TV case this time around.

Since the launch of the original Sky Glass, the designers inside the firm have launched a series of colourful speaker covers on Amazon that can be fitted after the fact to customise the appearance of your television, including this "Geometric" look

At checkout, Glass Gen 2 will ship with a colour-matched speaker cover and remote control. But that's it — so make sure you choose wisely.

5. It maxes out at 60Hz

In May 2024, Sky launched a free software update to Sky Glass owners that enabled a new Game Mode for anyone with a console plugged into one of the HDMI ports at the back of the telly. According to Sky, it reduced latency by 70% by combing through its software stack for efficiencies. No other picture settings will be adjusted when Auto Game Mode kicks in.

With such a focus on gaming, you'd be forgiven for thinking the next generation of Sky Glass would improve things further with a 120Hz panel that lets PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X, and Xbox Series S take advantage of higher refresh rates. Unfortunately, that hasn't happened.

While most Sky Glass Gen 2 owners won't notice its absence, gamers will be gutted to learn that this second-generation 4K TV sticks with the same 60Hz refresh rate as the 2021 original.
