Prices will return to normal as soon as the clock strikes midnight tonight

Apple has launched its annual education sale, with a £120 Gift Card to spend on anything in your nearest Apple Store bundled with every MacBook Air order.

Designed for students as they prepare for the next academic year, the sale also includes Apple's education discount on all MacBook Air models, which drops the price tag of the M2-powered laptop from £999 to £899.

But Amazon has toppled that deal with its site-wide Prime Day sale.

Until 11.59pm tonight, the same M2-powered MacBook Air has plummeted to £849. That's a £150 discount.

The discount is available on all four colours: Midnight, Space Grey, Starlight, andSilver. The MacBook Air price crash isn't the only Apple discount in the latest Prime Day deals, with lowest-ever prices for AirPods, AirPods Pro, and discounts to the iPad line-up too.

Apple completely redesigned the MacBook Air with the arrival of the M2-powered lineup, ditching the trademark wedge-shaped design that had been a feature of the lightweight laptop since its inception. It shrunk the bezels around the screen to squeeze a 13.6-inch screen into the same footprint as the 13.3-inch model.

That display tops out at 500nits of brightness, which should be enough to work outdoors, while the panel also supports P3 wide colour and 1 billion colours — perfect for browsing through your photo collection.

This redesign also saw the return of the fan-favourite MagSafe charger, which snaps to the body of the laptop with magnets and means tripping over the charging cable won't send your expensive laptop flying to the floor.

But with 18 hours of battery life, you won't need to reach for the new charger very often. Tipping the scales at just 1.2kg, this new redesign still manages to live up to the "Air" moniker.

Apple fitted its M2-powered MacBook Air with 8GB of RAM and 256GB of solid-state storage. There's also a 1080p HD webcam for video calls and a four-speaker sound system with enough oomph to support Spatial Audio when playing music and Dolby Atmos when watching a TV series or movie.

On the side, it has two Thunderbolt ports. These are compatible with all USB-C devices and cables, but unlock several extra features that make them stand out from a regular USB-C port, like the ability to connect external 4K monitors together as well as Thunderbolt expansion docks and hard drives.

The latest MacBook ships with the newest iteration of macOS, which offers free access to a range of productivity apps from Apple, including Pages, Keynote, Numbers, Garageband, Freeform, and QuickTime.

A slew of apps that will be instantly familiar to anyone with an iPhone or iPad, including Voice Memo, FaceTime, Stocks, Apple News, Podcasts, and Notes, to name a few, will also be preinstalled on the MacBook Air when you lift the lid for the first time.

This Apple MacBook Air deal is just one of thousands of blockbuster deals included in the Prime Day sale. As always with this annual site-wide sale, you'll need to be a Prime member to be able to access any of these deals. Without Prime membership, you'll be stuck paying the full RRP for items that've been discounted in the sale. You'll also lose out on next-day delivery at no extra cost on thousands of items.

But becoming an Amazon Prime member doesn't have to cost you anything.

That's because the US shopping giant offers a 30-day free trial of its membership scheme. Sign up, then cancel immediately and you'll still be able to enjoy all of the perks of Prime membership for a month.

If you don't cancel, you'll be charged the usual £8.99 per month fee at the end of the free trial period. We've written an in-depth guide on this loyalty scheme to work out "is Amazon Prime worth it in 2024".
