Terry Venables dead: Former England boss has died at the age of 80 after a battle with illness

The former footballer managed the likes of Barcelona, Tottenham and Leeds during his career

Former England boss Terry Venables has died at the age of 80.

A statement released by his family said: "We are totally devastated by the loss of a wonderful husband and father who passed away peacefully yesterday after a long illness.


"We would ask that privacy be given at this incredibly sad time to allow us to mourn the loss of this lovely man who we were so lucky to have had in our lives."

The LMA (League Managers Association) have responded by saying: "The LMA is deeply saddened to hear of the passing of LMA member and former LMA President Terry Venables.

"Our thoughts are very much with Yvette and all of Terry's family at this time."

Tributes to Venables have already started to pour in on social media, with one X user saying: "So sad about Terry Venables. Euro ‘96 was such a special tournament. RIP."

"RIP El Tel! Terry Venables brought so much entertainment at Euro96. I had no affiliation with England back then but still wanted them to win," said another.

A third fan said: RIP Terry Venables. It didn’t work out for him at Elland Road, but I’ll never forget Euro 96."

A fourth said: "Sad to hear Terry Venables has passed away remember him saying he would have loved a crack at managing Newcastle always had good things to say about us."

And a fifth stated: "So sorry to hear of the death of Terry Venables,a great England manager and so unlucky not to win euro 96. RIP Terry."

Former club Tottenham have also paid tribute to Venables.

Spurs said: "The Club is extremely saddened to learn of the passing of former player and manager Terry Venables.

"Our deepest condolences are with Terry’s friends and family at this incredibly difficult time.

"In tribute, we shall hold a minute’s applause prior to kick-off and our players will wear black armbands during this afternoon’s fixture against Aston Villa.

"Rest in peace, Terry."

Venables started his career in football in 1960 while playing for Chelsea.

He also had spells with Tottenham, Queens Park Rangers, Crystal Palace, Canterbury-Marrickville Olympic and St Patrick's Athletic during his time on the field.

After retiring, Venables landed his first job in management in 1876.

He spent four years at Selhurst Park before taking charge of London rivals Queen Park Rangers.

His fine work in the dugout earned him a job at La Liga giants Barcelona in 1984.

He won La Liga during his time at the Nou Camp and returned to England with Tottenham after four years in Catalonia.

Another four-year stint then followed before Venables took charge of England.

He steered the Three Lions to the semi-finals of Euro 1996, only for England's hopes of glory to be ended by Germany in a dramatic penalty shootout.

Venables also worked with the Three Lions as an assistant between 2006 and 2007.

And he had spells in charge of Australia, Middlesbrough and Leeds - as well as a second stint at Palace - with his last job in management coming all the way back in 2003.

Tottenham will wear black armbands when they face off with Aston Villa later today (2pm).
