Garbine Muguruza has tied the knot with Arthur Borges after meeting in peculiar circumstances three years ago

Former Wimbledon champion Garbine Muguruza has tied the knot with Arthur Borges, a fan she met in New York's Central Park three years ago.

The Spanish-Venezuelan tennis star, who clinched the Wimbledon title in 2017, married Borges in an intimate ceremony in Marbella, Spain.

Their love story began with a chance encounter during the US Open, when Borges approached Muguruza for a selfie.

The couple's whirlwind romance has culminated in marriage just months after Muguruza's retirement from professional tennis earlier this year.

Muguruza recounted their first meeting to Spanish publication HOLA!, saying: "My hotel was close to Central Park and I was bored, so I thought I should go for a walk.

"I go out and I run into him on the street. Suddenly, he turns and says, 'Good luck at the US Open.'

"I was left thinking, 'Wow, he's so handsome.'"

The couple quickly realised their compatibility, with Muguruza noting: "When we met, it was love at first sight and we realised very quickly that we were an ideal couple."

Borges, a model and businessman, proposed in Marbella last May.

Muguruza shared her emotions about the proposal with HOLA!, saying, "It felt weird.

"I was thinking something else and then when he proposed I started crying. I didn't know how to react. I said yes in the midst of tears, it was very romantic."

The couple's wedding took place in the same location where Borges proposed.

"Muguruza described their relationship as "a total movie," adding, "I knew I would marry him even before he asked me."

Their union brings together diverse backgrounds, with Muguruza being half-Venezuelan and half-Spanish, while Borges, born in Spain, has lived most of his life in Finland.
