Yoshihito Nishioka fell to the ground in agony during his US Open first-round match against Miomir Kecmanovic.

There were scary scenes on Court 8 on the opening day of the US Open when Yoshihito Nishioka was forced to retire from his match with Miomir Kecmanovic after collapsing to the floor.

Kecmanovic forced a deciding set after winning the fourth before things took a turn for the worse for his opponent.

Nishioka looked in some discomfort at the start of the fifth set as Kecmanovic held serve to love.

The 28-year-old's service game went to deuce with Nishioka seen bending over in pain while clutching his leg.

He carried on for the next point but worried spectators when he collapsed to the ground at the back of the court.

Nishioka appeared unable to move with the chair umpire quickly rushing over to his aid.

He then received medial treatment on court while Kecmanovic came over to sit by his side in a show of support.

The treatment continued for some time, raising more concern from those watching.

The Japanese tennis star was eventually forced to retire from the match as he was reportedly taken off the court in a wheelchair.

The United States Tennis Association (USTA) later confirmed Nishioka's retirement was due to cramping.

Kecmanovic now progresses to the second round where he will face No 18 seed Lorenzo Musetti.

The majority of the top seeds in the men's draw made it through the first day of the US Open.

Novak Djokovic had no such issue as he romped to a comfortable three-set victory over Radu Albot.

The world No 2 will now face compatriot Laslo Djere in the next round as he bids to retain his US Open crown.
