GB News is taking a look back at 2023 so far

With 2023 drawing to a close, it's time to take a look back at the year so far.

Novak Djokovic won three out of four majors, with Carlos Alcaraz beating the Serb in the Wimbledon final back in July.

It has, however, been a year to forget for the likes of Raphael Nadal and Emma Raducanu.

GB News now takes a look at three tennis winners and losers from the year so far, explaining our decisions in the process.

Winner: Novak Djokovic

Let's start with the obvious.

Djokovic always felt destined for a big 2023, especially after being banned from competing at the Australian Open and US Open last year.

And the Serb was outstanding, winning both of those tournaments as well as the French Open in June.

While Djokovic lost to Alcaraz in the final of Wimbledon, he pressed his opponent all the way. Whether he can finally win all four Grand Slams in one year in 2024 remains to be seen.

Loser: Rafael Nadal

It's harsh but Nadal will be the first to admit that he's endured a torrid year.

The Spaniard was restricted to just four matches this year and he won just one while losing the other three.

Nadal has been sidelined through injury and is set to end the year on just 45 points.

He will also end the year ranked 666th in the world. The 37-year-old is primed to retire next year - and fans will be hopeful he can conjure some of his old magic one last time.

Winner: Carlos Alcaraz

Alcaraz is some player, despite the 20-year-old's young age.

His victory over Djokovic in the final of Wimbledon was a statement, with the Spaniard keeping his nerve in the biggest moments to reign supreme.

Alcaraz has won 84.4 per cent of his matches in 2023 to establish himself as one of the best players on the planet, rocking many of his rivals in the process.

Furthermore, he's also ended the year with six titles to show for his efforts. If he carries on at the current rate, he may be set to dominate tennis for many years to come.

Loser: Emma Raducanu

Like Nadal, Emma Raducanu won't be looking back at 2023 with any fondness.

The Briton seems to have been cursed ever since her remarkable US Open win in 2021, with injuries regularly hampering the youngster.

Raducanu has been limited to just 10 matches this year, with her last appearance coming in April.

Fortunately for fans, the 21-year-old is set to return to the big stage at January's Australian Open. She won't, however, be among the favourites to lift the prize and a second major of her career.

Winner: Coco Gauff

For a couple of years, now, Coco Gauff has been making waves on the WTA.

And the 19-year-old experienced the best moment of her career in September when she powered her way to US Open glory.

Gauff has been dubbed America's biggest tennis talent since Serena Williams, which speaks volumes about the progress she's made in her career so far.

The teenager is currently third in the world rankings, behind only Iga Swiatek and Aryna Sabalenka.

Loser: Nick Kyrgios

Like Nadal and Raducanu, it seems a tad unfair to include Nick Kyrgios on the losers list.

Yet the sport has indeed missed out on the Australian who, like the aforementioned duo, has seen his time on the court extremely restricted.

The worst thing is that Kyrgios seems to be losing hope. Only recently, he said he didn't want to play tennis any more.

Fans will be hoping he can find the spirit to keep going, however, especially with the Australian considered one of the sport's great entertainers.
