Tennis star Liam Broady has defended Emma Raducanu after her controversial comments on Andy Murray at the US Open.

The 21-year-old is currently in New York preparing for the final Grand Slam of the year, having previously won the competition back in 2021.

Speaking prior to the start of the tournament, Raducanu said the US Open 'didn't feel different at all' without Murray and suggested life had already move on since his retirement.

"No, it doesn’t feel different at all," she said.

"I think tennis is unforgiving in that sense no matter who you are. It just moves on. There’s always another match; there’s always another tournament.

"Of course (Andy Murray’s) achieved amazing things and I watched him win this tournament (2012 US Open), but yeah, it’s a fast pace, just like life is.

"You know, it’s old news the next day kind of thing."

Raducanu had since been blasted by a number of tennis fans, with some accusing her of being 'arrogant' and 'disrespectful'.

But Broady, writing on X, has now jumped to his fellow Briton's defence.

"Don’t know why so many people are salty over Raducanu’s interview," he said.

"Her point is that the sport moves so fast, and she’s right about that.

"Nobody has time to stop and ponder things it’s just one tournament after another, a million miles an hour."

Broady also responded to several fans after his initial comments.

One fan messaged the tennis star to say: "Raducanu could say anything and will get haters."

Broady then replied saying: "Facts. And funnily enough the same happened to Andy at the start of his career! Sad to see the cycle being repeated."

Another said: "Do you think she could have phrased it a bit differently though? Of course she’s right but for most people who have seen that answer it’s still very fresh for them with Andy announcing his retirement."

Yet Broady doubled down and said: "I totally get that but the point she’s trying to get across is that the sport is brutal like that which is probably why it came across that way to some people.

"When athletes start worrying about how to phrase things all the time it leads to boring political answers."

Raducanu, meanwhile, has told Sky Sports that she's feeling good as she looks to win a second career major.

Her US Open triumph in 2021 came against all odds, with the Briton etching her name into the history books despite being 18.

Raducanu said: "I just play so much better when I'm happy and putting my personality out there.

"I think I've been playing a lot freer in the last month.

"I have been expressing myself, I've been fighting and there has been a lot of passion, I've been feisty. And that's me. I'm really tenacious and gritty."
