Roger Federer has turned his sporting success into financial triumph with a shrewd investment that dwarfs his tennis earnings. The Swiss legend's 3% stake in On Running has ballooned to an astonishing £277m ($360m).
This investment windfall is nearly triple the £100m prize money Federer accumulated during his illustrious 24-year tennis career.
The former world number one's business acumen has delivered returns that far exceed his on-court achievements, impressive as they were.
Federer's financial masterstroke came when he purchased his stake just before On Running went public in September 2021.
Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic battled many times on court
PAThe Swiss running shoe company's popularity soared with Federer's backing, causing its market value to rise to an impressive £9bn ($12bn).
As shares reached £18 ($24), Federer's investment value skyrocketed to £277m.
This savvy business move has proven far more lucrative than his tennis career, which itself was financially successful by any standard.
On Running has publicly acknowledged Federer's impact on their business success. A spokesperson told Tennis365: "Roger's contribution towards the success and immense popularity of The ROGER Pro is unquestionable and he continues to be one of On's most admired innovation leaders."
The company further praised his ongoing involvement despite retirement: "Roger's wealth of knowledge and expertise has been instrumental in every aspect of the performance design and technology adapted to meet the demands of the game."
The financial contrast between the two tennis greats is stark. Federer's £277m investment return far exceeds Djokovic's entire career earnings.
While Federer banked over £100m in prize money during his 24-year career, Djokovic has accumulated around £144m over 22 years.
Despite Djokovic's continued success on court into his late 30s, Federer's single investment move generated almost double what the Serbian has earned throughout his entire career.
Federer retired in 2022, but his financial legacy continues to grow through his business ventures.
