The Australian has vented his fury on social media

Nick Kyrgios has raged on social media after Jannik Sinner was given a three-month ban from tennis.

The Italian has been suspended from the tour after returning two positive drug tests last year, with Sinner always maintaining his innocence.

After the 23-year-old was initially cleared, the World Anti-Doping Agency appealed to the Court of Arbitration for Sport.

They announced today that Sinner had been banned, with a statement reading: "WADA accepts the athlete’s explanation for the cause of the violation as outlined in the first instance decision.

“WADA accepts that Mr. Sinner did not intend to cheat, and that his exposure to clostebol did not provide any performance-enhancing benefit and took place without his knowledge as the result of negligence of members of his entourage.

“However, under the Code and by virtue of CAS precedent, an athlete bears responsibility for the entourage’s negligence.

"Based on the unique set of facts of this case, a three-month suspension is deemed to be an appropriate outcome."

However, Kyrgios has now vented his fury on social media.

The Australian points out that WADA had been pushing for a ban of between one and two years.

And Kyrgios believes it is a 'sad day' for the sport that Sinner has only been suspended for three months, instead of for longer.

“So wada come out and say it would be a 1-2 year ban," he wrote on X.

"Obviously Sinners team have done everything in their power to just go ahead and take a 3 month ban, no titles lost, no prize money lost.

"Guilty or not? Sad day for tennis. Fairness in tennis does not exist."

In a separate post on Instagram, Kyrgios doubled down.

“To the future generation tennis players - after today, you can dope, just ‘without knowing’.... Test positive, play through all the investigation, then settle on a convenient 3 month ban, not get stripped of any money or titles and carry on," he said.

“Sad day for me - someone who has played this sport since I was 7 years old, battled injury after injury and have given a s**t load to this sport.

Sinner will be banned from between February 9 until May 4.

That means he'll be free to play in the French Open this summer, as well as Wimbledon.

Sinner has released his own statement reacting to the ban, with the world No 1 saying: "This case had been hanging over me now for nearly a year and the process still had a long time to run with a decision maybe only at the end of the year.

"I have always accepted that I am responsible for my team and realise Wada’s strict rules are an important protection for the sport I love.

"On that basis I have accepted Wada’s offer to resolve these proceedings on the basis of a three-month sanction."
