Andy Murray looked on the verge of exiting the Olympics and ending his tennis career before he fought back alongside Dan Evans to stay in the men's doubles draw.

Judy Murray has admitted she was already beginning to search for an early flight back home before her son pulled off an incredible comeback alongside Dan Evans to stay in the men's doubles draw on Sunday evening.

The three-time major champion moved all his focus to the doubles draw after withdrawing from the singles earlier in the week.

Evans managed to brush off an injury scare from his singles match earlier in the day to take to the court alongside Murray as they faced off against Kei Nishikori and Taro Daniel.

The Japanese duo quickly raced to a one-set lead with Murray and Evans unable to lay a glove on their opponents.

It was a far more competitive second set, but Murray and Evans twice went down a break before fighting back on both occasions.

The British pair had to dig deep before forcing a tiebreak and taking their chances to level up the match.

All that hard work appeared to be undone in the 10-point tiebreak as Nishikori and Daniel created five match-point opportunities.

Miraculously, Murray and Evans saved all five before clinching the match in sensational fashion after winning eight points in a row.

The dramatic ending even caught Murray's mother by surprise, who was watching from the stands inside Court Suzanne Lenglen.

"I was mentally working out which flight I would get home tonight," she told BBC Sport.

"But you can never write him off."

Murray has made a habit throughout his career of pulling off incredible comebacks.

No player in history has come back from two-sets-to-love more times than Murray's 11 throughout his career.

But his incredible comeback victory alongside Evans ranks up there as a new experience for the British sporting icon.

"I haven't played many matches that have ended like that before," Murray said.

"I don't think I've ever saved five consecutive match points and gone on to win a match.

"New experience for me and we left it extremely late.

"It was looking like we were on our way home and it was going to be the end but we found some great stuff at the end and we get another opportunity in a couple of days time.

"It's just great to get another two days at the Olympics and be around the team and support them as much as I can and try our best to win another medal."
