Emma Raducanu is looking at Mark Petchey to head up her team going into the summer

Emma Raducanu is in discussions with Mark Petchey about appointing him as her new coach, though a final agreement has not yet been reached.

Sources have confirmed the 22-year-old Briton would like the former top-100 player to head up her team.

The former US Open champion has been without a full-time coach since January and is reportedly very keen to secure Petchey's services.

Petchey and Raducanu previously worked together during the pandemic summer of 2020 at the National Tennis Centre in London.

Those weeks appear to have left quite an impression on Raducanu, with a strong mutual respect and rapport developing between the pair.

"She is increasingly keen to work with people she knew before she became famous," one report noted, with Petchey described as "a perfect example" of this approach.

Petchey, 54, previously coached Andy Murray for 10 months when the Scot was just 18 years old.

During their time together, Murray won his first ATP title in San Jose in 2006.

Under Petchey's guidance, Murray defeated former grand slam champions Andy Roddick and Lleyton Hewitt on his way to that breakthrough victory.

Murray would later go on to become world number one, winning three Grand Slam titles and two Olympic gold medals.

Petchey was in the coaching box alongside Jane O'Donoghue at last month's Miami Open, where Raducanu reached the quarter-finals.

This was her best tennis of the year and marked the first time she had reached the final eight of a WTA 1,000 event in her career.

It was also the most wins she had collected in a single tournament since her triumph at Flushing Meadows in 2021.

During that week, Raducanu said she had "really good people around me who I trust".

Raducanu's coaching staff has experienced significant turnover in recent times.

Nick Cavaday stepped down from his role in January due to health reasons after a solid year working together.

She then spent two weeks working with Vladimir Platenik through Indian Wells, but ended the partnership on the eve of the Miami Open.

Platenik told the BBC: "She told me she was feeling stressed... She was not feeling okay, and that was her decision."

The major hurdle that could prevent a long-term partnership is Petchey's role as a commentator for the Tennis Channel.

This would seem to restrict his availability for much of the year.

However, the Tennis Channel does not have the rights for Wimbledon, making Petchey likely available for much of the grass-court season.

With grass representing Raducanu's most reliable surface, an alliance through this key period could work well for both parties.
