Coco Gauff has opened up on how she's able to stay humble after beating Leylah Fernandez at the Australian Open on Friday morning.

The American is aiming to win her second singles Grand Slam title this winter, having previously won the US Open back in 2023.


Gauff was impressive on Friday as she dispatched Fernandez 6-4, 6-2 to charge into the fourth round.

Speaking after her win, the 20-year-old was asked how she's able to stay humble despite everything she's already achieved throughout her career.

And Gauff has thanked her 'community' for helping her, while also saying she's learnt to savour the moment as she bids for more Grand Slam glory.

"I definitely think my community has helped me," she said.

"I grew up in Delray Beach and I have been involved in volunteering in my community.

"I also grew up in the church, so when you have a community like that you have no choice but to keep your grounding.

"The people that I meet every single day make me realise that tennis feels like such high stakes but it's really not.

"I'm so lucky to be able to do what I do, get paid well by doing it and be able to use my platform to give back to others. I'm very grateful.

"The biggest thing I learned last year was to not take anything for granted and just realise that this time is going to go by so fast.

"Hopefully it doesn't feel like it in the moment, but I'm sure 20 years on from now I'll be wishing I could sometimes go back.

"I'm just trying to enjoy it whilst I'm here."

Meanwhile, speaking before the match at the Margaret Court Arena, John McEnroe opened up on Gauff and whether she'll be able to beat Aryna Sabalenka to Australian Open glory this year.

The tennis legend said: “Obviously Sabalenka is playing incredible tennis and she is playing with more confidence.

"She has worked hard to add more variety to her game, because obviously she has so much power.

“But I think Coco is in a better place than she has been in her career right now. She had a great run with Brad Gilbert, won an Open, but let him go after the Open.

“She has a bit of a new team here. She is thinking more on her own now, growing up, she is absolutely a threat.

"Those are the two players for me – one of those two is going to win it.”

Gauff will face Belinda Bencic in the fourth round on Sunday after thee Swiss star defeated Naomi Osaka via walkover at the John Cain Arena.
