The tennis star has expressed surprise at the lawsuit filed earlier this week

Carlos Alcaraz has distanced himself from the legal action filed by the Professional Tennis Players' Association against tennis governing bodies.

The 21-year-old Spanish star expressed surprise at the lawsuit, revealing he was unaware his previous comments about the tennis calendar had been included in legal documents.

"It was surprising for me, because no one had told me about it," Alcaraz told reporters at the Miami Open.

The four-time Grand Slam champion made it clear he does not back the action.

"There are things I agree with and there are other things I don't agree with. The main thing is I don't support what was done," he stated.

The PTPA, co-founded by Novak Djokovic, filed legal papers on Tuesday against the ATP, WTA, ITF and ITIA.

The lawsuit seeks to end what it describes as "monopolistic control" of the tennis tour.

It also demands financial compensation from the governing bodies.

The complaint is being brought by the PTPA and 12 players, including Djokovic's co-founder Vasek Pospisil and Nick Kyrgios.

They claim to be acting "on behalf of the entire player population".

The lawsuit criticises the schedule, ranking systems and control over image rights in professional tennis.

It accuses the governing bodies of disregarding player welfare.

Alcaraz was particularly concerned about his comments being used without his knowledge.

"Yesterday I saw on social media that they put something I said in a press conference in the documents and I wasn't aware of it," he explained.

The lawsuit had included a quote from Alcaraz criticising the hectic tennis calendar last September.

This was done without his consent or knowledge.

"I honestly don't support that letter, because I wasn't aware of it," Alcaraz emphasised.

The Spanish star's comments suggest not all top players are aligned with the union's legal strategy.

The PTPA was formed in 2020 with the aim of increasing player control in running the sport.

It seeks to reduce the role of the governing bodies in tennis.

The players' union has described the governing bodies as a "cartel" that forms agreements with tournaments to cap prize money.

It has also called the ranking points system "draconian".

The ATP Tour has been critical of the advocacy group, saying it was guilty of "division and distraction".

The WTA, which oversees the women's tour, called the lawsuit "regrettable and misguided".
