Oscar Pistorius refused to answer one question during talks with Reeva Steenkamp's father

Pistorius shot Reeva four times on the eve of Valentine's Day back in 2013, with the former Paralympian later sentenced to 13 years and five months for the murder.

He has always insisted he thought Reeva was an intruder in the middle of the night and that he was acting in self-defence.

Pistorius met Reeva's late father, Barry, while serving his sentence in prison.

This was done as part of South Africa's victim-offender dialogue programme.

According to the Daily Mail, Pistorius was flown from a detention centre to closer to the Steenkamp's Port Elizabeth home.

He then talked with Barry but was unable to answer when asked to swear on his family's life that the shooting wasn't deliberate.

"I spoke to him and I told him he was lying," Barry, who died in September, told the newspaper.

"I looked directly at him, but he could not look me in the eye.

"I said 'you have got a brother and a sister. On their life…are you telling me the truth?'

"He just put his head down ...and I left."

Barry also said Pistorius would have felt better had he made the confession - while also insisting he never once considered attacking his daughter's killer.

"If he had admitted it, he would have felt different as well," he said.

"That part of her would have gone. He will have to live with his evil secret.

"It [attacking Pistorius] would not have been worth it.

"I would have rather got into the ring with Tyson Fury…I would have felt better."

Barry thinks his daughter and Pistorius argued prior to the tragic accident, saying he feels Reeva was trying to leave the runner.

"I believe that there was something prior to that. There must have been one hell of an argument," he said.

"Her clothes were thrown out of the window and found outside.

"She was trying to leave, but she couldn't jump out of the window."

Reeva's mother, June, believes Pistorius will be haunted for the rest of his life.

"He will see her face whenever he closes his eyes," she said.

"Apparently, he hardly sleeps without medication because he obviously sees her face and that is going to be there forever."

In her impact statement to Pistorius' parole hearing, June also said she feels her husband died of a broken heart following the death of their daughter 10 years previously.

"I have no doubt that Barry died of a broken heart," read the statement.

"No parent should have to bury a child and most certainly not in the circumstances that prevailed in the demise of Reeva.

"Following Reeva's death, Barry and I, both devastated, tried with whatever emotional reserves that remained to take care and support one another.

"My dear Barry left this world utterly devastated by the thought that he had failed to protect his daughter and therefore in his role as father, as he perceived it.

"The pain caused by the dastardly murder of Reeva, did not only include emotional trauma.

"It also included trauma that manifested physically as became evident in the accelerated deterioration in health for both Barry and myself."
