Snooker fans are desperate to see Ronnie O'Sullivan in action at the World Championship

Ronnie O'Sullivan has given snooker fans fresh hope that he will compete in the upcoming World Championship after producing a stunning 147 break in Saudi Arabia.

The seven-time world champion, who has been absent from professional competition since January, compiled the maximum break in just six minutes and 24 seconds.

Footage of the impressive feat emerged this week from Riyadh, where O'Sullivan has a snooker academy in his name.

The 49-year-old's display with his new cue has sparked optimism among supporters that he might return for the Crucible tournament, which begins on April 19.

The break was uploaded to O'Sullivan's social media channels, suggesting growing confidence in his game.

O'Sullivan has been on hiatus since January when he snapped his cue in frustration during the Championship League and withdrew before his final group match.

He subsequently pulled out of the Masters, which he was due to defend, and a string of other tournaments.

This extended absence raised concerns about his future in the sport and whether he would compete at the Crucible for a record-extending 33rd time.

The Rocket recently broke his silence, stating he would leave his decision about participating in the World Championship as late as possible.

His absence has left fans anxiously awaiting news of his return to the professional circuit.

O'Sullivan's maximum break in Saudi Arabia was only slightly longer than his record five-minute and eight-second 147 against Mick Price in the 1997 World Championship.

The display of skill demonstrated that the Rocket is in razor sharp form despite his lengthy absence.

Fans reacted enthusiastically on social media, with one X user pointing out: "Looks like he's hitting the ball great."

However, a final decision remains pending, with Francis adding: "He will decide, last minute, whether he wants to go."

The manager emphasised the importance of full commitment: "If you're going to go, then you have to go and give it everything."

Francis also acknowledged O'Sullivan's wellbeing must be considered: "All of us know that Ronnie is his own man and will make his own decision. As a snooker fan we'd love him to play there. But it has to be at what cost to his mental health?"
