Ronnie O'Sullivan stunned fans by announcing his decision to withdraw from the World Grand Prix

Ronnie O'Sullivan's latest tournament withdrawal has cost him the chance to earn £300,000 in prize money.

The snooker icon has pulled out of the World Grand Prix in Hong Kong, continuing his pattern of absences in 2025.

His limited participation this year means he can no longer qualify for the Players Championship or Tour Championship.

Both tournaments offered £150,000 to the winner, but O'Sullivan's ranking has now dropped too low to compete.

O'Sullivan has now missed seven tournaments since losing to Barry Hawkins in the UK Championship first round.

The 49-year-old has backed out of the Shoot Out, Scottish Open, Masters, German Masters, Welsh Open and World Open.

The World Grand Prix in Hong Kong is the latest event he has withdrawn from.

The world number four has only played five times in 2025, all behind closed doors at the Championship League in Leicester.

His continued absences have seen him tumble down the rankings.

O'Sullivan expressed disappointment about missing the Hong Kong tournament.

"I am very disappointed not to be competing. I had been eager to make my comeback in Hong Kong and have put in my utmost effort but unfortunately must consider my health," he said.

The Rocket emphasised that prioritising his wellbeing has become essential.

He also thanked the organisers and fans in Hong Kong for their support despite his withdrawal.

His health concerns have consistently been cited as the reason for his tournament absences.

O'Sullivan's next competitive appearance is now expected to be at the World Championship qualifiers.

These will take place between April 7 and April 16 in Sheffield.

The main tournament begins at the Crucible on April 19, with the final scheduled for May 5.

Despite being ranked fourth in the world, O'Sullivan's limited participation means he has missed opportunities to maintain his ranking.

His absence from multiple tournaments has significantly impacted his standing in the sport.

LATEST SPORT NEWS:

In February, O'Sullivan apologised to fans on social media for his tournament withdrawals.

"I realise plenty of people who bought tickets to some recent snooker events will have been frustrated when I withdrew. So, I just wanted to say sorry," he wrote.

He explained his absences were due to health concerns.

"I've been trying to prioritise my health and well-being, which sometimes means making last-minute decisions not to play."
