England head coach Steve Borthwick has confirmed that back-row forward Tom Curry suffered a dead leg during yesterday's Calcutta Cup victory over Scotland.

Curry, who had missed training in the week before the match, was forced off shortly after halftime.

"Tom Curry has a dead leg," Borthwick said.

"He took it early in the game, and he's such a tough, brave competitor, and he kept going, but shortly after halftime it became too uncomfortable."

The injury is expected to heal within a few days.

The situation appears less certain for Tom Willis, who was forced off in the first half after failing a Head Injury Assessment (HIA).

"Tom Willis was removed with an HIA, and is now in the care of the medical staff," Borthwick confirmed.

The upcoming fallow week could provide Willis additional recovery time before the Italy match.

Should Willis remain unavailable for the Italy fixture, a back-row reshuffle could see Ben Earl move to number eight, a position he has occupied regularly under Borthwick's leadership.

Either Ben Curry or Chandler Cunningham-South could also be called up to fill the vacant position.

Both players made positive contributions as substitutes against Scotland, with Cunningham-South having previously been an unused replacement against France.

Borthwick praised the impact of his substitutes in the Scotland victory.

"We speak a lot around the impact of the bench," the England coach said. "I thought they were very good in that second half today and added a whole lot of impact."

He expressed optimism about the team's development, stating: "We have the makings of what is going to be a very good team and experiences like today, 23-man efforts like today, will really help us."

England now turn their focus to their upcoming clash with Italy on March 9.

Following the Italy match, England will conclude their Six Nations campaign against Wales on March 15.

Scotland coach Gregor Townsend, meanwhile, insisted he was proud of his team's performance despite the disappointing result.

“It won’t be too difficult to lift the players because we asked them to show who we are as a team against England,” he said.

“I believe we did that, both in attack and defence and in the effort that’s required to play for Scotland.

“A lot of what we worked on and what we showed, we’ve got to bring that out in the next two games – and they will be tough challenges.

“I watched a lot of the Wales game against Ireland, they played very well so we know we’ll have to build on what we did against England.

“There’s Paris, which will be a very tough game against France. But how we played away from home against England shows that we can create opportunities and score tries against a very good defence.”
