Stuart Hogg will be sentenced on December 5

Former Scotland rugby captain Stuart Hogg has pleaded guilty to domestic abuse charges against his estranged wife, Gillian.

The 32-year-old appeared at Selkirk Sheriff Court, admitting to abusive behaviour over a five-year period from 2019 to 2024.

Hogg acknowledged shouting, swearing, and acting in an abusive manner towards his wife.

The court heard that he sent an excessive number of text messages, with one instance involving more than 200 messages in just a couple of hours.

The former rugby star also admitted to repeatedly tracking his wife's movements using phone apps.

The court heard that Hogg would regularly go out drinking before returning home and behaving abusively.

He would swear at his ex-wife and accuse her of "not being fun" for staying upstairs with their children.

Gillian Smith, Hogg's estranged wife, was reportedly left afraid and wishing "for it to be morning as soon as possible".

The couple, who married in August 2016, have four children together.

Hogg's abusive behaviour left his family terrified, with his ex-wife often having to comfort their children upstairs.

Hogg's rugby career was distinguished, with 100 caps for Scotland and a tally of 27 tries, placing him third on the country's all-time list.

He captained Scotland from 2020 to 2023, leading the team to consecutive victories over England.

Hogg also represented the British and Irish Lions on three tours in 2013, 2017, and 2021. He played in two tests during the 2021 South Africa tour.

Earlier this year, Hogg was awarded an MBE for his services to rugby union. He announced his retirement from the sport ahead of the 2023 World Cup.

Hogg's guilty plea came on the first day of what was scheduled to be a three-day trial. He had previously denied all charges.
