The Irisham jockey produced a sublime performance to reign supreme on Saturday

Patrick Mullins won't receive a penny of the £40,000 typically awarded to Grand National winning jockeys despite his historic triumph on Nick Rockett at Aintree.

The Irishman, who guided his mount to victory in the prestigious race, misses out on the prize money due to his amateur status.

Professional jockeys usually collect around eight per cent of the winnings, but amateurs ride purely for enjoyment rather than financial gain.

Aintree spectators witnessed a thrilling contest as Nick Rockett battled with last year's champion, I Am Maximus, in the closing stages of the 2025 Grand National.

It was Nick Rockett who ultimately prevailed, with Mullins expertly guiding his mount to victory.

The win carried extra significance as Patrick joined his cousins David and Emmet in the family's Grand National honour roll.

Following his triumph, Mullins expressed his emotions: "It's everything I've dreamed of since I was a kid.

"I know it's a cliche, but when I was five or six years old, I was reading books about the National and watching black and white videos of Red Rum. To put my name there is very special."

The jockey admitted he had "too good a start" and worried about losing ground at the Canal Turn.

The victory was a true family affair, with Nick Rockett trained by Patrick's father, Willie Mullins.

However, the trainer admitted his focus was solely on his son's success rather than the historic 1-2-3 finish.

"I was single-mindedly thinking about Patrick riding the winner," he revealed.

"Patrick comes in every morning and runs the whole show. He matches all the horses and the riders every morning.

"He's very precise and concise about things. He knows what to do and when to do it. I am absolutely delighted for him."

The proud father added that Patrick "could take over" as it "just comes natural to him."

The Grand National has deep roots in the Mullins family tradition, with Willie revealing: "The first race we saw growing up was the Grand National in black and white.

"We all lived every year for the horse you were going to back in the National - and the owners and trainers of the National runners were heroes in our game."

Nick Rockett owner Stewart Andrew added: "I can't tell you. Different class.

"Everybody had written the horse off, he'd drifted into the betting. He won the best two trials in Ireland easily. He's a class horse and has the heart of a lion."
