The Super Bowl went to overtime for only the second time in history with the Kansas City Chiefs beating the San Francisco 49ers.

The Kansas City Chiefs won a dramatic Super Bowl LVIII that went into overtime with the San Francisco 49ers falling at the final hurdle.

Super Bowl LVIII got off to a slow start with no score from either side in the first quarter.

The 49ers were the better of the two sides to start with and soon got the board with Jake Moody landing a 55-yard field goal.

Their lead was extended to 10 points after a miraculous trick play with Brock Purdy offloading to Jauan Jennings.

The receiver threw the width of the field to Christian McCaffrey who leapt in the air to catch it and found himself in a pocket of space before breaking through to the end zone for the game's first touchdown.

Kansas City managed to stop the rut with seconds to spare in the first half when Harrison Butker scored a 28-yard field goal.

Usher then stole the show in the Halfime Super Bowl show with special guests such as Ludacris, Lil Jon and Alicia Keys.

Attention soon switched back to the game for the start of the second half and the Chiefs clearly came out rejuvenated by the long break.

Butker landed another long field goal from 57 yards midway through the quarter.

The Chiefs then took the lead for the first time in the match when Patrick Mahomes threw a 16-yard pass to a wide-open Marquez Valdes-Scantling.

San Francisco regained their lead at the start of the fourth quarter when Brock Purdy found an onrushing Jennings on the five-yard line, who bounced off two tackles into the end zone.

The game was all square with little over five minutes to go with Butker landing another kick from 24 yards out.

That put all the pressure on Patrick Mahomes in the dying seconds of the fourth quarter to try and win the game for the Chiefs.

Mahomes attempted a throw to Travis Kelce, but it was no good with the Chiefs bringing out Butker to kick through the posts with three seconds left and to send the game into overtime.

It's the first time the new overtime rules were being used with both teams getting the opportunity to have a possession as a opposed to the previous sudden-death format.

Moody booted a field goal from 27 yards to give San Francisco the lead with Kansas City needing a field goal of their own at least to stay in the Super Bowl.

But Mahomes, who stepped up when it mattered most in the dying seconds with a brilliant play for a touchdown pass to Mecole Hardman with the Chiefs going on to win the Super Bowl.

It's the first time since the New England Patriots in 2004 and 2005 a team has won back-to-back Super Bowl titles with Mahomes now a three-time NFL champion at 28 years old.
