The 35-year-old was spotted with a severely swollen eye ahead of the opening race of the festival.


A nasty cut along his brow was visibly held together by stitches.

Despite the painful-looking injury, however, Skelton took to the saddle for his scheduled races.

The highly-rated jockey appeared determined to compete despite his obvious discomfort.

Skelton reportedly sustained the injury after being kicked by a horse.

The injury sparked debate among punters about whether he should be competing.

"There is no way he should be riding today!" one concerned fan remarked.

Another questioned: "Surely he shouldn't be allowed to ride like that."

A third added: "I'm no doctor but that doesn't look great."

Despite these safety concerns from spectators, officials permitted Skelton to participate in his scheduled races.

The jockey showed remarkable determination to continue with his Cheltenham commitments despite the visible trauma to his face.

Skelton rode L'Eau du Sud in the Arkle Challenge Trophy at 14:00, with the horse starting as 5/1 second favourite.

Despite the promising odds, L'Eau du Sud could only manage fourth place as Jango Baie caused an upset in the race.

The jockey then took to the saddle aboard Take No Chances in the 15:20 Mares' Hurdle.

Lossiemouth was widely tipped to win the Mares' Hurdle contest.

The horse is trained by Skelton's brother Dan, highlighting the family connections within the sport.

Skelton arrived at Cheltenham with an impressive record, having previously secured nine winners at the prestigious venue.

He enjoyed a successful 2024 with four victories, including retaining the Coral Cup aboard Langer Dan.

Harry is the son of Nick Skelton, a two-time Olympic gold medal-winning show jumper.

His brother Dan trains Take No Chances and other successful horses.

The couple welcomed their first child, a baby boy named Rory, in April last year.
