The upcoming instalment of the popular series is set to release in 2025

Rockstar Games have cancelled plans for a next-gen upgrade for Red Read Redemption 2 as they work on Grand Theft Auto 6, according to reports.

Red Dead 2 released on the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One back in October 2018 before then proceeding to come out on the PC the following year.

It is the sixth best-selling video game of all time, selling over 61 million units over the past five-and-a-half years.

Only Mario Kart 8, PUBG: Battlegrounds, Wii Sports, Tetris, Grand Theft Auto V and Minecraft have sold more in gaming history.

Yet Tez2, who specialises in leaks regarding GTA games, has now claimed plans for an upgrade have been shelved.

“I’ve heard about [the Red Dead Redemption 2 port] a long time ago," they wrote.

"As well as [Rockstar’s] plan to come up with an Enhanced Rockstar Editor. All cancelled / halted now."

There has also been talk of GTA IV potentially getting a remaster.

Set in Liberty City, and released in 2008, it is considered the grittiest Grand Theft Auto game to date.

But talk of a remaster has gone quiet, particularly after the disastrous launch of the remastered Grand Theft Auto trilogy.

Back in November 2021, GTA 3, GTA: Vice City and GTA: San Andreas were all given makeovers to modernise the three titles.

However, fans were far from happy with what they got - with many venting their fury on social media.

All three games had bugs that needed patching, with some glitches making the series borderline unplayable.

Rockstar are, however, keen to get GTA 6 as the game prepares to release next year.

They released a first trailer at the tail of end of last year, offering an exciting glimpse into the future.

Vice City has never looked better, while Lucia and Jason are the two protagonists players will be able to control.

It is the first time a GTA game has featured a female protagonist, with Rockstar keen to push the limits as they look to produce a memorable experience for fans to enjoy.

There is currently no word on when a second trailer will release, with the first being viewed a staggering 175 million times from Rockstar's official YouTube channel at the current time of writing.

Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick recently opened up on GTA 6 and says the leak before the launch of the first trailer was 'disappointing'.

Footage of the game appeared hours before Rockstar had intended.

But Zelnick was happy with how the trailer was received, admitting it 'broke the internet'.

"It's amazing when the trailer announcement is huge news, and then we were very gratified when the trailer broke the internet...so we couldn't be happier or more excited," he said.

"In terms of the leak, that's always disappointing for the team, but ultimately, I don't think it hurt us."

The 66-year-old also revealed that Rockstar were hoping for 'perfection' from the upcoming game as well.

"We're seeking perfection, and when we feel we've optimized creatively, that's the time to release," he said.

"There is an inherent tension, potentially, between getting something to market and creating perfection.

"But this company errs on the side of perfection."
