Nick Rockett rode to victory at the Grand National at odds of 33/1

Amateur jockey Patrick Mullins has been handed an eight-day suspension after riding Nick Rockett to victory in the Grand National.

The 35-year-old guided the Willie Mullins-trained gelding to a stunning win at odds of 33/1 over the weekend.

The Whip Review Committee issued the suspension after reviewing Mullins' ride just days after his remarkable success.

Mullins was found to have used his whip eight times from the final fence, exceeding the permitted level of seven.

The violation occurred as Nick Rockett fended off the challenge of last year's victor I Am Maximus to secure the win.

The infringement was identified during a standard post-race review by racing officials.

The usual penalty for such an offence is four days, but it has been doubled because the Grand National is a Class One race.

Mullins will therefore be out of action on April 23, April 25, May 2, May 7, May 10, May 14, May 16 and May 20.

The dates span nearly a month, though they are not consecutive racing days.

The suspension won't take the gloss off Nick Rockett's victory, which was part of a remarkable few days for the Mullins family.

The win has put trainer Willie Mullins back in contention to win the British trainer's title.

The achievement remains significant despite the penalty, highlighting the family's dominance in the prestigious race.

Willie Mullins, typically cool and composed, could not contain his emotions after watching his son cross the finishing line.

Speaking after the win, he said: "I don't think anything can be better than this."

"It's huge. Now I know how Ted Walsh felt when Ruby won it for him. To win it as a trainer is wonderful but what a special day for Patrick. I just can't comprehend it or take it in."

The Irish trainer's dominance in the race was remarkable, with Mullins training five of the first seven finishers in the Grand National.

Willie Mullins added: "To sire the winning rider, to train the winner and to have Jackie here. We planned this with Stewart Andrew over $10 bottles of wine in Australia and missed our restaurant booking."

"All great plans come together. I went to school with Sadie years ago. I met her years later at the sales and we went for a cup of tea. I said I'd buy a horse for her and here we are."
